Oh. My. God.
It’s the invasion of the trash and treasure fan club!
As I look around me there are people everywhere. It’s like the day after Christmas when all the sales are starting.
There’s that group of people standing at the end of the driveway waiting for the gates to open. They have their little trolleys and are standing as though they’re lining up for the one hundred metre sprint.
Then there’s that other group of people, the smarter people, who cautiously stand back and wait patiently. Unlike the people at the front, they don’t like the idea of being trampled on. They know that as soon as the gates open it’ll be like Spain’s running with the bulls.
On either side of the road there are lots of cars parked, some with trailers and others without. This is where the other group of people come into it. The ones that creep past like gang bangers inspecting their pray.
It looks like a scene out of a movie, but it’s not. In fact it’s just the Jones’ open house sale. They are preparing for their move to London.
First thing this morning, it was 6am precisely in fact, I went around to Nancy’s to help set up for their open house sale. Nancy and I went around sticking flyers up on all the local store windows and stobie poles in their area. We even put up large cardboard signs with big arrows pointing in the direction of their house on the main roads. Because of the suddenness of their move they didn’t have time to plan, prepare or advertise. As it turns out, tacky signs and word of mouth has done wonders.
Now, just under two hours later, I’m standing in Nancy’s lounge room staring out at the masses of people. I swear they all look animalistic. I can’t believe the amount of people that want to buy other people’s stuff. Mr and Mrs Jones own pretty decent stuff, I mean they earn a crap load of money, but let’s face it, it’s still second hand. Still, if other people want to buy pre-owned stuff then that’s their decision. Personally I like my things new.
In the lounge room a table is set up and Mr and Mrs Jones are sitting there waiting to collect the money. Nancy and I have been labelled as security guards to ensure no one pinches anything and runs off without paying. I only wish I had the uniform to match.
At precisely 8am Nancy opens the door and the people come flooding in. It’s like sardines swimming upstream. I’m trying to keep an eye on everyone but there are people everywhere and I can barely move. I’m trying to wade my way through the hordes of people but it’s very slow going. So far no one seems to be doing anything dodgy so I hope that’s a good sign.
As the morning progresses Nancy and I slowly wander through the house and keep an eye on people. Just when I think it’s going to be an uneventful morning I see a girl of no more than 11 or 12 pick up a small ornament. I look away for a split second then suddenly this girl is walking out of the room and I can’t see the ornament on her or the table. My suspicions instantly arise. I follow the girl out of the house and onto the porch. She looks around her guiltily then begins to walk away quickly. She’s so guilty, I can feel it!
“Excuse me.” I call with my hands on my hips.
She turns around and as soon as she sees me she starts to run away. I’m fairly quick though so I catch up to her and grab her arm in a matter of seconds.
