For some reason this word came clearly into Scar's mind as she rushed through the water. She could not have said where it came from. Maybe one of the others had been saying it right before she disappeared. Also, what the hell was happening?

This was when she remembered she was under-fucking-water and could not actually breathe. She jerked up sharply, and to her surprise found herself jumping to her feet in a normal-seeming one-foot-deep pond. And everyone around her seemed to be doing the same. But it was hard to tell, because for some reason, it was pitch dark.

Ari jumped quickly out of the water and scrambled onto the shore, before helping Ricon out as well, panting heavily. Scar looked around and saw a number of others emerging from the water. A few people were pulling flashlights out of their backpacks. Some people, like Pierre, Nic, and Luna looked like they were on the verge of a panic attack, others like Lei and Anya just looked vaguely confused, while a few like Candon and Santiago just seemed remarkably unconcerned about the whole thing.

"So, what's going on?" said Scar. "And WHY THE FRICK DID YOU GUYS ALMOST DROWN ME?"

"I would like to know that too," snarled Travis, splashing rapidly around the pond and helping everyone up, counting them. "Thirteen. So who the fuck is responsible for this shit?" He glared at Lei, who happened to be the person he was helping up.

"I didn't do it!" said Lei, looking surprised, and then looked around thoughtfully. "Are we dead? Are we ghosts? Are we gonna haunt the pond? Do we get to scare people?"

"BOO!" screamed Ricon, jumping out behind her. Lei shrieked and fell of the rock she was sitting on, but then began laughing.

Agi groaned and tipped water out of his ear as he got to his feet. "Please please please tell me this is normal in this country and you all know what's going on."

"Sorry bud," said Luna, who looked like she was calming down quickly. "Nothing like this has ever happened to me before. Though if I do die, I wanna be resurected as a cheetah." Lei reached over and high-fived her.

"What happened?" said Nic—no, Gavin, he was reaching into his pocket and swapping the necklace. "Did Nic try to jump in a pond?"

"No, we must have fallen into a hole of some kind," said Virginia. She was currently trying to decide whether or not a panic attack would be appropriate. "And my day was going great..."
