CHAPTER TWOTHE KNIFE EVENTUALLY sliced through the flesh and my lips twitched into a smile. I tilted my head slightly, peering as the maid served a slice of the roasted chicken on to my plate. Unlike the chicken, King Vasili on the other hand, was very much alive.
I know, it's quite a shame. But it was too soon anyway.
An extensive table laid in the centre of the hall; a seat placed at the end where the king remained. His palms remained perched on the table which was hampered with massive platters of delicacies. Savoury fruits were served and drizzled by syrup. Countless of sweets, breads, cheeses, and rills of essence flickered in delight.
"Tell me, Daria. What do you crave most?" He inquired, uttering the foreign name I had entirely made up. The king peered over my figure, completely ignoring the maid beside him who bowed in a brief courtesy.
"What is your desire?"
I waited for the maids to scramble before shifting my attention towards the king. "Desire?" I scrunched my eyebrows, feigning a look of innocence. "I've never thought of that."
My gaze was settled on the food placed in front of me, picking at them as I let a frown lighten my entire features.
Father would have scolded me for uttering such nonsense. According to him, one must have an ambition to earn their worth. But what I yearned for, was simple. I wanted to make him proud. To be praised and to be fully admitted that I was worthy to take his crown.
Sighing, I looked up to him with a soft smile and watched his gaze twitched.
"I've always wanted to find love." I lied, fidgeting shyly in my seat. It was truly a miracle how I wasn't vomiting right this moment. Though the king seemed to believe the words spewing out of my mouth. He peered at me in amusement; clasping his palms to one another but remained silent nonetheless.
I kept my gaze locked with his, peering with pure naive. "It's simply fascinating, don't you agree?"
"Of course."
He took my hand in his before pressing a light kiss on the back of my palm.
"I know it may be hard to believe," He began as he toyed with the food scattering on his plate.
"But from hundreds of women I have encountered, you are by far the most intriguing." He placed his glass on the table, a sound of glass clinking following afterwards.
How touching.
"Really?" I gaped in a feigned astonishment. Mirroring his previous gesture by placing the glass in my hold onto the table. He smiled, resting his chin on his clasped palms. "You're quite the beauty" He said, "But what I've truly fallen for was more than that."
I smiled.
It was clear that King Vasili takes me as a fool.
"You have a way with words." I briefly respond. And by the way his mouth curled, I knew he agreed.
"Likewise." He simply said and I couldn't help but wonder.
"What about you, your majesty?" I asked him, peering at him with curious eyes and yet he merely arched an eyebrow at the words I had uttered.
"What about me?" Amusement was clear in his eyes and yet they remained pierced on to mine, almost as if he was taunting me.
My lips curled into a smile as I gazed at him in wonder, "What is your deepest desire?"
