Eyes lidded, I walk down the hallway to the cafeteria. I was up practically all night last studying, and when I went to bed I forgot to set an alarm. Thankfully, Laney called and told me she was picking me up, so that gave me a solid fifteen minutes to get everything ready.
I gripped my brown paper bag, crinkling it, as I looked around the busy room, trying to find Laney. Spotting her sitting in a corner, I rush over, my shoes scuffing against the ground. When I reach the table, I plop down and immediately Laney starts talking.
"So I never got to finish what I was talking about this morning . . ." She says, starting to talk about why she decided to pick me up this morning. "Karen thinks me going out so much is a bad idea, considering my 'grades are dropping'." She uses air quotes, while rolling her eyes at Karen's concerns.
I grab an apple out of my bag, but before I take a bite I say, "Isn't she the one who said you needed to get out more, like, seven months ago?" I bite into my apple, waiting for her reply.
"Yes. And that's the thing. She always tells me to do one thing, then she tells me to do the exact opposite! Who the hell does she think she is?! My mother?" She says raising her voice a little. She closes her eyes, then takes a deep breath. "She agrivates me." She sighs, running her hand across her face. Her eys focus on something to the left of us, and I turn around to look, only finding Michael and his group of friends.
Turning back around confused I ask, "Why are you staring at Michael?" She blushes, a bright pink color on her pale skin.
"Oh, um, I-I'm not staring at Michael . . ." She drifts off, looking at me straight in my eyes.
I turn to look back at the three boys. "Then who were you looking at?" As soon as I said that though, the blonde boy looks up at us, and smirks straight in our direction. Laney blushes an even darker shade this time, and hastily looks away.
Piecing the puzzle together, my lips shoot up into a smirk. "Ohhh," I say knowingly.
"Mary, stop." Laney says, laughing slightly, her cheeks still red.
"Is that the guy from the diner? When we saw Michael?" I ask, finishing my apple.
"Yeah . . . we've been talking lately." She has a small smile on her face as she says this, and I know that this isn't just another one of her crushes.
"You seem to really like him . . . what's his name?" I ask, because even though I've seen him around here before, I never really paid attention to him that much.
"His name is Luke, and yeah, I guess I do . . . hey, do you have the answers to the math homework?" She says, and we immediately go into the topic of math.

I stand up from my seat quietly, making sure not to disrupt the other students. Handing my finished test to my teacher, he points to the door, silently tellingme I was free to go. I readjust my backpack as I walk out the door, and into the hallway.
School still had about ten minutes before everyone else was left out, so I sat down on the front steps waiting for Laney to be done.
As soon as the bell rings, I see students come out in swarms, then I see Laney in the distance. She's talking to the blonde headed kid - Luke - and she's grinning madly. She waves at him before she walks over to me, her hair swinging behind her.
When she gets to me she exclaims excitedly, "Mary, c'mon you have to come to the party. Oh my gosh, oh my gosh!" She rushes us over to her car, and we get in before she lets out a small shriek. "Mary, oh my god! Luke just said that he really wanted to see me at the party tonight, come on Mary please, you have to come now!" She sticks the keys into the ignition, and starts driving away from the small building.
"Why do I have to come if you're just going to be hanging out with Luke the entire time?" I grab the handle on the side of the car, holding on tight since she's driving slightly reckless.
"Because Luke said that Michael keeps talking about you, and that he really wants to see you! Mary, please?" She begs.
I sigh, thinking about it. "Fine, oh my god, if it'll get you to shut up about it."
She squeals loudly, taking her hands off of the steering wheel and clapping them together. "Oh my god, put your hands back on the wheel. I don't need to get into another accident." I mumbke the last part to myself.
"Sorry I'm just really excited! Ok, I'm taking you to my house because we can get ready there, and you can just borrow some of my clothes!" She exclaims excitedly.
Laney's obviously excited, so I try to act excited for her, knowing that she really wants to go.
