She'd always wondered what it would feel like to be normal. To be accepted. To be treated like all the other kids in her class. She wished it, dreamed of it, but deep down she knew it wasnt possible. That was something well out of her reach. Those who knew her saw her as a freak. Deep down, she almost believed them. Almost. She didnt want to of course, but she knew it was true. Paige was as far from being normal as day was from night.
In every aspect, Paige looked, even behaved, like every other girl her age. At least to those who didnt get too close. Only those who did, found out what she could do. They never stayed after that. She didnt blame them though. Even she was afraid of herself. She had yet to understand this strange gift or curse of hers. The latter being the more likely of the two.
"Would it be too much to ask for your attention in my class, Miss Brim?"
Paige looked up with a start. Her mind had started to wander off. Again.
Redness burned to her cheeks as she realized everyone's eyes were on her. She didn't say anything, just stared at the book perched open on her desk.
"As i was saying," Ms.Harrison continued, ignoring Paige completely, "the human mind is a very complicated organ. Scientists estimate that we can only use about 10 percent of our brain's actual potential. Countless theories have been put forward on how to unlock the remaining potential and what one could hope to achieve with that new level of control and enlightment. Of course, like most theories, they are only assumptions, mere speculation, never proven in the slightest..." Paige started to daydream again and soon, Ms.Harrison's voice was lost to the wind.
The bell came announcing that class was over, and Paige slowly gathered her stuff and buttoned her blazer, taking her time so no one would get the chance to talk to her. Not that anyone would try. She poked her head up and was satisfied that everyone had left the room, it was a Friday after all.
Paige made her way to the girls' bathroom and was glad to find it empty. She went straight to the sink and washed her face before looking at the mirror in front of her. Her reflection stared at her, a beautiful 16 year old girl with long dark brown hair that fell past her shoulders. That was the only thing she liked about herself, except maybe her eyes. She liked those bluish gray eyes that hid whatever she was thinking from people. Even on the edge of an outbreak, they would never give her away. Always looking calm, if somewhat eerie.
Sighing, she picked up her bag and headed towards the door.
Just as she was about to grab the handle, the door swung open inwards, right into her face. She cried out, backed away from the door and fell. Her hand rubbing her nose, eyes already watering.
A tall man walked in with his hands in his jacket pockets. For a moment Paige was mesmerized by him. He was very well built. Even through his multilayers of clothing she could tell every part of his body from his tight jawline to his muscles was toned. She would've called him attractive what with his straight nose, high cheek bones and dark green eyes if it weren't for the vibe he was giving off. He had an aura of danger around him. She couldn't just feel it, she could see it. Literally. Everything about him unnerved her. He stopped at the doorway and she opened her mouth to tell him that this was the girls' bathroom and to get out but he took his left hand out of his pocket and Paige stared bewilderly at the gun in his hand. All the words got stuck in her throat and all she could think of was 'oh my god he's going to kill me.'
