It was somewhat of a bleak winter in Maycomb County, the winter that my father Atticus became ill. Chilly winters were a rarity in Southern Alabama, so this was a memorable time of course, for multiple of reasons besides the weather. I was 17, and Jem the age of 21. Jem still lived at home with us. We couldn't afford to send him off to a university yet, and honestly, he had not vocalized this, but I believe he wasn't exactly sure what he would like to major in when and if he is to attend university. Calpurnia was still working for us during this time, just as she always had. Of course, she was becoming older but heck - we all were. Just because you grow older doesn't necessarily mean that you grow apart. Boo Radley came out and saved Jem at I when I was still quite small, and Jem beginning to become a young man. Ever since that verdict of that court case, that night after the pageant, the night Jem broke his arm and Mr. Bob Ewell's death; things had changed between us. From that point on, we had a new connection. We spoke to each other more, and I felt like, and to this day I still do feel like, he had a new respect for me as a person due to this series of events. We became closer, but after Atticus's passing we drifted apart and went our separate ways. I said something about growing older doesn't always mean growing apart. Even though my brother and I, naturally, were growing older, but it was mainly the passing that tore us apart for quite some time. The cancer overtook Atticus's brain so quickly, and it was far too late for doctors to do any help. He died January 5, 1943 at the age of 60, exactly one week after being diagnosed. At the time Jem was working a job to help save for college. He didn't have enough money to move out on his own yet because all of his money he earned was saved for paying for university, including housing. After our father's death, he gave up on college and moved out. He said it was because there were too many memories still lingering in this house from our childhood for him to keep bearing now that both of our parents had passed. We quarreled a few times since the death of Atticus, and that's the straw that broke the camel's back as far as our relationship as siblings was concerned. We became not angry with each other, but we simply had a difference of opinions. I'm 36 now, and so much time has passed. A few months ago I decided something; I wanted to go back to visit Maycomb County.
