Warm sunny day. The smell of fresh cut grass overflowed my senses. I'm running out the door smiling ear to ear. My mom and dad are waiting for in the car. I walk over getting into the backseat.
My dad backs out of the driveway. Driving down the road. Another wonderful weekend at the lake house. It was a peaceful and quiet place. Beautiful crystal lake and cool shade under the trees.
By the way, my name is Natalie Justice. I'm 13 years old. Right now at least. This Saturday is my birthday and I turn 14. Another reason why we are here.
I could spend my birthday with friends. Although, my parents are much more fun. I smiled as we slowly pulled up to the house.
I love this place so much. I open the door stepping out.
"This house keeps getting prettier and prettier everyday." I said.
My dad wrapped his arm around my shoulder.
"Yes it does. Just like you do." sighed my dad.
I smiled up at him. He hands me the keys to the door. I jogged toward the entrance. The long oak door with crystal window.
I insert the key into the lock. I turn.the key to the left. I slowly open the door stepping inside.
The smell of pine overwhelmed my senses. The scent of the woods. I walk through the entryway and into the kitchen.
Everything still looked the same. I head toward the patio door. I slid the door open. The cool breeze hits my face.
The lake looked so beautiful. Can't wait to jump of the deck and swim. Let the tiny waves take me to serenity.
I hear the shuffling of luggage as I see my father bring them in. I go back inside to help him.
I carried my luggage up to my room. I walk over to the window seat. I smiled to myself staring out. Feels so good to be back at the lake house.
Later that night my dad sets up a fire. I help my mom ready the marshmallows, gram crackers, and Hersheys chocolates.
After a nice dinner of grilled catfish and steamed vegatables. It is time for dessert. Smores. Yum.
I jab the sweet pillow on to the end of my stick. Then raised over the fire to warm up.
Not to long or it would turn into charcoal. Once it turned golden brown. I remove it for the fire.
My mother had already had my graham cracker and chocolate waiting for the hot marshmallow to sit in between. She hands the smore to me.
I could wait to bite into it. I smiled to myself as I could taste the warm and gooey marshmallow melt in my mouth.
The chocolate melted and it tasted like heaven. I love smores. My dad starts telling us a scary story.
With ever brush that shook from the wind. Or every owl the howled. The tale felt too real. I would jump through each suspenseful sentence.
At the very end my father roared at us. Causing my mother and I to scream at the top of our lungs.
Thanks for the nightmares, Dad! His typical tale of a midnight slasher. Who preys on those that stay out late in the night.
My eyes grew heavy. Today tired me out. While my father cleared up. My mom helped me upstairs to my room.
I changed out of my regular clothes. Slipping into my warm pajamas. I pull my hair up into a high bun.
Finished brushing my teeth. Then climbed under the covers. I know I'm too old to be tucked in. But, I don't care.
My mom placed a kiss on my forehead. A smile grew on her ageless face. She's the best mother you could ever ask for.
"Sweet dreams, Natalie. I love you." she sang in a low whisper to me.
"I love you, too. Today was the best birthday gift you two could ever give me." I said with a smile.
"You're welcome, darling. Good night."
"Night."
My mom turns off the switch on my lamp. She slips out the door closing it behind her. I close my eyes falling into deep slumber.
I'm soon awaken by my father. I felt his kiss on my cheek. I smile in my sleep.
"Happy Birthday, Natalie." he whispers.
I awake wrapping my arms around his neck. I have the greatest dad in the world. I loved him so much.
I lay back down going back to sleep. I can hear my father's footsteps behind me. As he exits my room.
I had no idea that this weekend could be the last time I see them.
