"Are you settling in Jay?"
"I'm good Ma." I lay on my stomach on my bed after practice talking to my mom. My stomach rumbled and protested loudly underneath me but she still hadn't sent the money that she promised and the cafeteria was already closed. I really needed to get a job. Going without dinner after practice ran late for the second time this week was for the birds. Besides that, my cellphone was about to get shut off because she hadn't paid the bill.
The summer had passed quickly. My days were filled with soccer practice, camps, and scrimmages. When we weren't on the field, we were expected to be in the weight room or running on the track. I grew the closest to Tika and Kyla. We spent most of our days together except for when I went back to the dorms to sleep. And half the time I stayed over at Tika's place or in Kyla's apartment in the Village.
Because we were roommates and both freshman, Ashley was a huge part of my new life too... and I also called her a friend. But she spent most of her time with her new bae, Lo Beckham, and obviously since he was an asshole and at the top of my shit list, we didn't exactly mesh. So there was that.
Classes had finally started this week and my life was becoming a lot more complicated. Between our first game this weekend and having to start algebra II, I was already feeling overwhelmed. I was just glad my English and math classes were balanced out by my art classes, human form level I and modern art.
"You sound tired." Her voice sounded worried.
"No. Just exhausted from practice. It ran late again and I had an early morning class. Plus I still have math homework to do." I rattled off the list. My human form class was eight am in the morning which meant I had to get up even earlier to finish my morning work out. And I had begun to procrastinate already putting off my weekly math homework until now. I had a shit ton to do. So instead of hanging with Kayla and Tika as usual, I was stuck in my dorm room.
"How are you're friends? What are they're names again?"
"Kayla and Tika? They're good." She had met them over FaceTime a couple of times, so she should have known their names already. Both of them loved my mom though. They thought she was young, beautiful, and fun compared to other moms. Which I guess she was... though sometimes I wished for less of that and more of strict and boring.
"What about boys?"
I groaned loudly.
"Girls then?"
"No Ma. Neither. There's no one I'm interested in right now."
"Ok..." she said backing off. She was always questioning why I'd never shown interest in boys. I was definitely attracted to them but as far as talking to them romantically... well it rarely happened. Besides. Most of them were idiots. Like Hitman.
"Let me go. I got studying to do."
"Ok remember to have fun Jay. You're nineteen."
"I'll remember." I smirked and then hung up the phone. I got up and decided that I should head to the library as I would probably fall asleep if I stayed in the room. I threw on one of my LSU hoodies over my t shirt and shorts and slid on some slides. Gathering my stuff, I walked out into the night. The empty campus was softly lit by the yellow light of the street posts and the blue light of a few emergency stations. There were only a few students still milling around at this time.
A few moments later I walked through the front doors of the library and headed to the back where a private usually abandoned study area lay. Most of the library was empty at this late hour anyway, so I was certain I would have the area completely to myself as usual. That was a mistaken thought. Because, unfortunately, I walked in on something I could never unsee instead.
