⌜ chapter five ⌟
Letty's standing in the backyard of the Matthews' house and she's looking at the bench near the door. The brunette takes a deep breath as she looks down, not really sure what she's going to do anymore. She had one really good thing in her life, one... And she ruined it.
Eric's arm is wrapped around his girlfriend as they look up at the stars in the night sky, and he smiles as he then looks down at the brunette beside him. A smile tugs at her lips as she turns her head and her dark brown eyes meet his lighter ones.
"You're supposed to be looking at the stars. It's not that often that we can see them this well in the city." Letty says, and he shrugs.
"I'd rather look at you." He says, and her smile widens.
The brunette turns so that she's facing him. "You know, I think you might actually be the sweetest guy ever." She says, and he just smiles at her.
Letty leans forward then and she presses her lips against his as he rests his hand on the side of her face. He then slides closer to her on the bench as she reaches toward him, and her fingers curl around the flannel that he's wearing. After a few more seconds, Eric pulls back and rests his forehead against hers.
"You're amazing, you know that?" Eric says as he sits back and looks at her. "You've been through more than anyone else that I've ever met, but you're still so amazing. It's like it just makes you stronger. You're kind, and you help people, and you are the best thing in my life."
Letty smiles as she looks at him, not really knowing how to respond to that.
"Every time I think that you can't be any more incredible, you prove me wrong. I think I... I love you." He tells her, and her eyes widen as her smile disappears. She doesn't look happy any more, she looks shocked, her expression resembling something like a deer in a car's headlights as she simply stares at Eric. "I love you, Letty." He repeats, but still, she doesn't respond.
"Scarlett?" Mrs. Matthews gets the teenage girl's attention, and she turns around. "What are you doing out here? Come inside."
"Oh, no, I can't stay." The brunette shakes her head. "I just wanted to drop off Eric's sweater that he let me borrow while we were out here the other night. Can you give it to him for me, please?"
"Well, sure, honey." She nods as she takes the sweater, confused when she sees that Letty looks sad. "Are you sure you can't stay for dinner?"
Letty nods. "I have a shift at the market in half an hour, but thank you." She says, and the older woman nods. "And, uh... Thank you for everything that you've done for me. I'll never be able to tell you how much I appreciate the way that you've always been there when I needed someone."
"Of course." She says, her expression turning more concerned. "Is everything okay?"
"Mhm." The brunette clenches her teeth as she nods. "Yeah, everything's...fine. I have to go." She says and then quickly walks past her and leaves the Matthews' house.
The next day, Letty's standing in the school cafeteria as she listens to Eric give a speech about his younger brother. She has tears in her dark eyes as she watches him, and then his words suddenly halt when he sees her standing in the audience. The brunette takes a deep breath when she sees how sad he looks as his eyes stay on her, so she then turns around quickly and starts for the door. This is supposed to be a happy thing because Cory saved the school from burning down, and she doesn't want to ruin it for anyone, especially Eric.
"Scarlett?" Shawn calls as she rushes past him and Topanga; he saw the tears in her eyes before she disappeared out the door.
The day after the rally in the cafeteria, Letty's sitting on the bench by the steps, and Shawn walks over to her as she's drawing in her sketchbook. "Hey." He greets as he looks down at her.
"Hi." She glances at him and then continues with her drawing.
"Still giving me the silent treatment?"
"I'm not giving you the silent treatment, Shawn, and I'm not ignoring you. I just have nothing to say to you anymore. You don't listen when I talk, you obviously don't care. I'm just done wasting my breath...and my time." She tells him.
"Look, I know I shouldn't've said what I said. It was wrong, and I'm sorry." He tells her. "I really want to fix things here."
"No, you want me to pretend that you didn't hurt me, and you want things to go back to how they were before." Letty closes her sketchbook as she looks up at him. "It's been six months, so this isn't you being sorry. Sorry would've been apologizing six months ago, or right after I got back after Summer break. Now I have other things to worry about, other problems that I have to take care of." She stands up and walks away from him.
"Scarlett, wait!" Shawn calls after her, but she keeps walking.
Eric walks into the hallway a couple minutes later, and Shawn shuts his locker as he makes his way over to him. "I don't know where Cory went." The older boy tells him.
"I think his ego floated him away." He says. "Right now, I'm more concerned with what's going on with my sister."
"Oh, now you care?" He questions. "You haven't seemed to care much about anything in Letty's life for months."
"Hey, I always care!"
"Really?" He slams his locker shut as he turns to face the younger boy. "Because it's been half a year since you hurt her so bad that she left without saying goodbye to anyone. And since she's been back, you've been waiting for her to make things right between you. Grow up, Shawn. And while you're at it, don't ask me about what's going on with Letty. If you care about her as much as you claim you do, apologize for being an asshole and then talk to her."
"Whoa, hey." Mr. Turner walks up beside the two teenage boys and makes them both take a step back. "What's going on here?"
"Ask him." Eric then turns around and walks away from them.
"What was that, Hunter?" He questions, and Shawn looks up at him.
