The day started off as usual. Ma was gone before we had even woken up. Father was asleep on the worn out sofa with an empty can of beer on the table beside him.

Along with several empty cans of beer on the floor.

I made it a habit to put what little money I had into the pocket of the uniform my little sister wore every day. The door creaked as I tried to get out and I snuck a look back at the old man, who was thankfully still sleeping.

I jogged to school, not wanting to be late and not wanting Ma to go to the counselor's room for my tardiness, only stopping when my stomach clenched painfully. Reminded of the fact that I had no breakfast today and will never have another if I didn't eat today, I thought of going to the soup kitchen to see if they had any food to give. Most days they shooed me away. Maybe my pitiful state would force them to give me something.

I was winded when I got to school. The runs of the past had never seemed as hard as the one today. The sight of my batchmates laughing in the hallways, lovers kissing in an area where they thought they wouldn't be seen, and the bright sunshine that was Desiree lifted my spirits. She saw me from across the lawn, smiled at me and winked, then did our little secret wave.

Desiree could make anyone feel special. Even the people she had only met once, at a party two months ago.

I went to my favorite wall in the school and stayed there for a while. My head hurt a bit , but I was fine. Nothing like pain to wake you up in the morning.

Then, the world felt like it was spinning. I was leaning against the wall to steady myself. I didn't need food. I was fine.

You're not hungry, Lucas. You're just tired from work. Get up, get to the nurse. Get some Advil.

The bell rang for class. I closed my eyes to silence the sound. It worsened the headache.

Shut up shut up shut up.

My head was in so much pain. My stomach ached as it digested itself for breakfast. My bag felt so heavy on my shoulder. Before I blacked out, I saw an angel running to save me.

Help.
