Why can't it be me?

A question she often asked inside her thoughts, a query within the depths of her heart that she could just not release. Smiling every time, accepting every occurrence as it is, a calm facade yet it was all a mask. 

Those happy laughs, those timid smiles, those times she would act as if she were fine but deep inside, she knew she wasn't even a little bit alright the way she was. She knew that she were just a replacement, a second option that could be discarded if the first were already perfect.

Her twin sister was way better than she could ever be and the maiden was aware of this, for her, it was no reason to stay with her twin as she were just a burden but somehow he had melted her heart with his soft and gentle touch and words that she'd been longing to hear for so long; those syllables of acceptance, finally someone who could see her for herself. 

Though as life goes up and down, a roller-coaster of sensations, joy along with rejection, regrets and misfortune; it were just not meant to be. He had his eyes on someone else, someone who did not accept him for who he was, someone who could not return his harbored feelings even after a lot of effort and persuasion; clearly she did not see him as anything special, he was worth more than she was treating him but the lad chose to be with the silver-haired female despite his wasted effort and failure leading for the blunette to feel remorse for him and hatred at the same time.

"Emilia, I love you!" The brown-haired male exclaimed, petals of the cherry blossom flowers swaying with the wind that passed by them in the garden, he stood in front of the girl whom posed her rival for his endearment; her lilac eyes glancing away from the other as sorrow filled them. She kept her mouth shut as he looked at the maiden dearly, patiently waiting for her to utter a word whilst the blue-haired female could only watch at the romantic scene before them, jealousy sparking even as she knew what the outcome of such confession was.

Why can't he give up?

She promised that she would go with him anywhere, she desired to be always the first to reach out to him and his heart. She wanted to be the one for him, she could've given him anything in return for his affection. Kept it all in, she always wore a beam, accepting each and every one of his decisions as the maiden put her utmost trust to him; even helping him with persuading the other female to love the one she'd love most yet did not return her feelings, back. 

Everything she had done for him yet everything he did were for the sake of the other, her actions unnoticed or as if she were nothing but a tool for him to use to be able to acquire his long dream of feel the affection of a different lady. It had always been unfair, Rem was always the inferior one in anything and there he had made her time move forward once more by viewing her as someone with good qualities and nothing needed to be changed about herself yet maybe those words were all plastic, for the sake of her help as she was still inferior to Emilia in his eyes.

What does she have that I don't?

"I'm sorry, Subaru-kun. I've told this a lot of times, I'm sorry. I can't love you back." She stated as he looked down, agony perhaps filling his veins yet plastering a grin once more. "I'll be waiting then, for the time you could. I believe one day, it would come."

Oh my hero, why can't you notice I?
Am I nothing but a ghost in a shell?
Effort you exerted for her, why can't it be for mine?

It may be selfish of me to ask, but why can't you belong to me?

Walking towards her direction, his slight footsteps that echoed throughout the distance as he wiped his now falling tears as he were rejected once more. It had always happened yet he refused to give up on her, leaving the other to try and keep comforting him, being positive and all despite her brewing resentment of his actions and him, himself. 

"Subaru-kun.." Silence surrounding them as she uttered her words, an eerie feeling as she refused to lay a hand on him nor even state her often words of comfort. There was something wrong, she didn't seem to be the person she used to be, the Rem in front of him now gave off a different vibe. Not her calm, polite and composed self but her ruined self of confusion, envy and negativity shown. "She's rejected you lots of times.."

Continuing her statement, eyes dull as if lost sanity. Flail in hand, hitting him recklessly once more as if it were the first time that she had killed him due to her doubt and suspicion though this time was a different reason and all he could see before everything had blacked out and he died again were her lenient smile as leisure tears fell down her azure eyes alike the skies. 

"I love you, Subaru-kun but why can't it be me for once?"
Her ached giggles agonizing him whom fell to deep slumber once more.
