summary:

in a school where kids are represented by emotions, joy wants to become friends with her neighbour, depression.

depression huffed as he sat down in his seat, the sound of the teachers voice filling his hears.

"alright class, turn to page 95," she announced.

depression looked up to joy, his eyes studying her blank expression and dull aura. he blinked, snapping himself out of a daze.

"hey um...," he started, before taking a deep breath and looking up at joy. "how are you doing?"

he watched her, awaiting an answer or even a reaction, but joy remained silent, her expression not changing from its previous state.

"if..if you want-", he started but was instantly cut off.

"leave me alone," the girl snapped, not bothering to look up at depression.

depression gave her one last glance before sighing and looking away.

later that evening depression found himself standing by his windows, his curtains closed. when he first moved in, he sneaked looks through his closed curtains, and that's when he first noticed joy. every day she would look out her windows across to him, hoping to wave or interact with him, but every day she would get nothing, depression's curtains remained shut.

he took a deep breath as he reached out, his fingers gently grazing where the separate curtains met, debating with his mind and heart if he should open them. he blinked slowly as he placed a hand on each curtain and pushed them open, the sunset glow radiating gently through his room.

his eyes gazed across to joy's bedroom windows, but he was met with more disappointment when he realised that they were closed. he let out a disappointed sigh as he closed the curtains again and made his way over to his bed.

...

around two weeks went by and joy and depression hadn't interacted, the only words she had said to him was along the lines of:

"leave me alone."

"stop talking."

depression began to think back to when he first met joy, and how she had tried her hardest to make friends with him but he pushed away all of her advances. he began to realise that their roles had reversed, she was now the one ignoring him.

depression began to feel extremely guilty for how he treated joy. joy didn't deserve anything of the sorts, and he was cruel to her, way too cruel to her. the whole night depression couldn't get the small girl with y/e/c eyes out of his head, her being the last thought before he drifted off to sleep around 2am.

...

it was the last day of school before christmas break, a chilly winter breeze swept through the town.

depression had sat through maths class without hearing a peep from the girl beside him.

the school bell rung loudly signalling the end of the maths lesson, and of the whole school day.

"alright class, be safe over the holidays!", their teacher announced as student began to pack up their belongings.

depression took a deep breath as he swung his backpack over his shoulder, slowly turning to joy who was quickly packing her things away.

"hey joy...um...what are you doing over the break?", he asked, nervously scratching his head.

"don't worry about it," she replied blankly, causing a defeated expression to fall upon depression's face.

"i'm usually alone on christmas day, so if you want to stop by, it would be nice to have some company," depression explained, hopeful that joy would want to come and spend time with him.

a few silent moments passed.

"i'll pass," she replied, throwing her backpack over her shoulder.

depression looked away slowly, nodding his head uncomfortably.

"okay," he spoke in a quiet voice.

he took one last look at the girl, his eyes burning slightly. he shook his head, a sad feeling in the pit of his stomach.

"i'm sorry," he breathed out softly before turning away to leave the class.

"depression?", joy spoke in a whisper.

but the boy was already out of the classroom. she looked down with a defeated sigh, before making her way out of the classroom and heading home.
