"Indie, you're up!"
her hands shake as she grabs the hem of her grey t-shirt and takes a tentative step forward. The massive warehouse being used for temporary training is echoing with the grunts of all the soldiers along side her beating the absolute life out of each other. The florescent glare from the ceiling lights creates a large contrast next to the opening in the roof. The weather is perfect today, and since no one can fly, they opened the roof so no one would overheat.
Out of the corner of her eye, she sees her older sister Julia seething at Dr. Roseburn for making her go first. Her little brother Wesley, however, is gazing up with his one brown one blue eye with so much admiration she could've burst right there on the spot.
"Indie! Focus!"
The short snap of the electric baton crackling on snaps her attention to the brooding man in front of her.
"Is he stupid? I won't even feel that."
She ever so slightly cocked her head to the left, feeling the tips of her auburn ponytail brush her shoulder blade. She hears her sister huff and casts a glance to her right where her siblings are still standing, barely even breathing.
"Just pretend to be scared, we can't have him knowing it doesn't hurt. Do you really want to find out what they'll use on you if that doesn't work?"
Her sister nags her in her mind. She can't help but feel deflated that she'll never truly have a moment alone with her thoughts; at least not with Julia close by.
"You've got this Indie," Wesley squeaks, immediately making Indie's stomach drop. Dr. Roseburn's nostrils flare out as he quickly strides to stand in between Indie and her siblings, making the 10 foot distance separating them look like an inch. As soon as he reaches them, she hears a sickening smack, a crumpling little boy fall to the ground, and a loud gasp. Before she can react any further, a small flicker of light comes from the ceiling and strikes the doctor right between the eyes.
He sinks to the floor with a much larger crumple, eyes and mouth still open mid sentence.
There's a stunned silence throughout the warehouse as all training halts around them.
There's a loud ringing in her ears as her shoulders and forearms are immediately seized and shackled by the closest guards, forcing her to her knees. The collar to keep her under control clasps around her neck, the cool metal making her shiver.
She can barely move, but she manages to look over at her siblings one last time before being hauled off to her punishment, not knowing then it would be the last time she ever sees them. Tears are streaming out of all of their eyes as Wesley wails at the sight of his sister.
"Nine is too young to go through all this, you have to get him out."
Her sister's eyes cloud over as she shakes her head, knowing there's no way out.
"Never forget how much we love you."
Julia swallows hard as she sends Indie this message, already mourning her little sister.
Present
The room-is an 8x8 cement hole considered a room?- shakes and shudders around her. She's trying and failing to feel through the tectonic plates in the earth around her to find out if this is natural or not, knowing it won't work. Did they seriously have to infuse the concrete with the sensor blockers? Why can't she just have this one thing?
Even if they didn't, the super trendy bracelets she gets to wear 24/7, besides training, would block her abilities anyway. Knowing HYDRA, they probably implanted a chip in her neck that could make her head explode at any moment.
As the shuddering continues, Indie continues to thinks back to the last day she saw real sunlight, not one she created. As she sits in the dark, she wishes for nothing more than to create her own little sun in her dark hole. She's done it before, but with the just lovely bracelets she is at a very boring state of sitting cross legged in the dark.
Little does she know, She's about to be freed by her best friends in the whole world. She hears the lid of her cement hole slowly begin to shift, the only thought in her mind that they're giving her her bathroom break pretty early and she's very grateful. She's had to pee for like three hours. Or maybe three minutes? What even is time? Who decided to create a mundane system of tracking every waking moment of life? Why do we as humans have to follow this ridiculous-
"Out, Indie, unless you'd like me to carry you?" Indie snaps out of her rabbit hole trance, only to be blinded by the light of the sun.
The sun?
"W-Wanda? Pietro! what-"
"No questions, only running," Pietro quickly says as he yanks her from her very uncomfortable spot on the floor. She's almost positive there's an indent on the floor of her butt from the countless years sitting in that exact spot and she's a bit sad she'll never get to know. As her stiff legs adjust to running behind Pietro, who's jog is about as fast as a cheetah so she can "catch up", an explosion ripples through the ground behind them, causing a crack in the earth below them. In a smooth motion, Pietro picks her up bridal style and speeds them deep into the woods.
"Wanda-!" She croaks, realizing he left her behind, reaching out her arms as she rests her tired chin on Pietro's strong shoulder. She grunts as she pushes herself to look at Pietro, who only grins back. His eyes glance up into the air, which she immediately mimics to see Wanda gracefully float herself down onto the ground.
Tears spring into Indie's deep green eyes as she feels the fresh air fill her lungs and the warm sunlight caress her skin. She buries her face into Pietro's shoulder and begins to chuckle. He sets her feet onto the ground and looks quizzically into her eyes. Wanda walks to his side to look at their friend's sunken face, shining brighter than she's ever seen.
"What is so funny?" Wanda asks gently, placing a soft hand on Indie's shoulder.
"The sun."
