Some things in the world just weren't meant to be.
Just like how wasabi and chocolate would never get along no matter how much she used his puppy eyes, Solar knew in her heart that there were certain things that just could not happen. Sure, Solar tried to live her life to the fullest extent by constantly fighting fear with hope, but she was certain in her very core that some things should never ever happen.
Case in point: Ahn Hyejin should never ever ever get back together with Namjoon.
As soon as Hyejin had called to cancel their usual Friday night meetup in lieu of catching up with Namjoon, alarms had gone off in Solar's head. Hyejin had mentioned him in passing before once or twice, and while he did sound like a decent fellow. There was one big catch:
He was Ahn Hyejin's ex-boyfriend.
"There is no way that Namjoon is good news," Solar declared loudly, pacing back and forth in her living room.
Irene watched her idly from the couch, eyes moving left and right as though she was spectating a tennis match.
"Yongsun-ah, you haven't even met the guy," she pointed out with all the patience of a friend that was definitely thinking 'here we go again'.
"I don't need to see him to know that he's not a good person!"
"There is zero logic in what you just said."
"Okay, if you want logic, then explain this: Who in their right mind would break up with Ahn Hyejin?"
"I'm sure he had his reasons," Irene shrugged. "Besides, Hwasa's okay with him. Why aren't you?"
"Because!" Yongsun threw her hands up in the air. "Hyejin is too kind, too good, too wonderful, too gorgeous for this world and people like to take advantage of that. I won't let them!"
Irene suppressed a sigh.
"I'm sure she appreciates that," she said dryly. "But seriously, tone down on the jealousy a bit, okay? It's just dinner between two friends."
"I'm not jealous... Seriously, I'm not!" Solar protested when Chorong scoffed. "I'm just concerned for Hyejin."
"Right," Irene said, her voice dripping with sarcasm. "I mean, sure, that's one way of putting it."
"You're no help," Solar muttered. She glared petulantly at her best friend before whipping out her phone. "Good thing I know someone who's actually useful."
Irene narrowed her eyes. "What are you up to...?"
Solar ignored her, quickly tapping a few buttons before pressing her phone to her ear. As soon as the line connected, she began speaking, not even waiting for the person on the other end to say hello.
"Hey!" Yongsun greeted brightly. "Remember how I promised to introduce you to Hwasa sometime? Say, are you free on Friday night?"
"Oh boy," Irene sighed. "Here we go again."
"So why am I here again?" Moonbyul muttered under her breath.
"You're here so we can display the power of friendship and how lovely platonic relationships are," Solar answered for the seventh time that night.
"Right," Moonbyul coughed conspicuously. She was by no means protesting her presence in this restaurant that was far above her pay grade, but she still couldn't believe how Solar dragged her into this four person dinner... with Ahn Hyejin aka Hwasa and Kim Namjoon.
Ahn Hyejin and Kim Namjoon.
On any other day, Moonbyul would have busted out her full reporter regalia and armory, complete with two different cameras and five separate recorders, all for the sake of a tandem interview with the two people currently sitting across her. Sure, science wasn't her strong suit but she sure as hell would do her best to surreptitiously google terms and questions if she had the chance to speak with two of the brightest minds in the field of Cardiology.
