A/N: Here I am again, this time with something featuring Erwin Smith. Seriously, there is far too little yandere content of him out there and that's why I'm so happy to remedy that.

What is love?

It had always been an interesting question, one of life's more tasteful mysteries. And one that Erwin Smith didn't bother grabbling with. Because love was never something fundamental to him, just another curiosity that lay inside a glass vitrine that was supposed to be regarded with impersonal interest. As such it was just as outdated and useless.

As a top-tier commander, he didn't have the time for such distractions. He had already sacrificed so much in the line of duty – in the name of his home and its freedom – his heart was fully dedicated to the cause. How could he pledge himself to another person for some flimsy sentiments if there were things of greater importance?

Somehow it had always been that way – since the death of his father at least. All the anger and sorrow stemming from that injustice had served as to fuel to drive him to his ultimate goal. Curiosity was the compass needle that directed him to that final destination.

If he was safe in his commitment to the greater good and immune to the trivialities of life, then what was this entity tearing through his insides? This sublime thing that didn't have any regards to right and wrong? And why did he so adore and loath it simultaneously with a passion that burned brighter than the sun?

It wasn't the result as pain nor was it due to fire-flash fury nor had it been invoked by boredom and inactivity. The monstrosity that now inhabited him was roused by none other than you. Like the flip of a lever, all his calm calculation and tranquillity flew out the window. In its stead, something started chewing at his heart and scratching at his throat and gnawing his bones.

How on earth could you induce such an extreme reaction?

You weren't even special. Sure, you were dedicated and had steady hands under pressure – the mark of a good nurse. For that he admired you.

That didn't change the fact that you weren't outstanding, you weren't significate or as glorious as the morning star shorty before it faded to make room for the sun. You weren't noticeable, to say the least, mainly because you were constantly tucked away in the infirmary.

It was only during a post battle visit to the hospital that he encountered you.

His usual method of keeping anyone and anything at arm's length hadn't worked, his incautious attitude due to the delirium that always follows extreme blood loss. Barely being held up, he had been dragged over to a cot and his best soldiers had helped him unceremoniously clamber on the hard mattress.

Then you had been there, shooing Levi and Mike away like you had the authority to do so. Their response of promptly scuttling away affirmed that. Technically you did – many soldiers learned the hard way not to argue with medical staff.

It was an unofficial hierarchy that kicked in after every expedition and it was best that way. In that very moment, you had been an unmovable rock amidst a storm – something that he had to cling to least he be swept away. In that instance, Erwin had found himself enticed by you.

Screams and sobs had echoed off the walls as soldiers had had their mauled limbs amputated and wounds disinfected. Despite the gory backdrop, you had offered him a warm smile and in his folly he had weakly mimicked it.
