I ran out of the house, jumping off of the second step before rushing to the van and hopping into the passenger's seat.

My hands worked to pull back my braids into a ponytail. "This is why I'm against naps, I texted you I was on the way home about sixteen times" My brother, Tyler turned to look at me "Why didn't you come to school again?".

I set my purse down by my feet and looked over at him "Bad morning, you know I have those sometimes" He laughed at my response before pulling out of the driveway "You can't keep getting away with missing out on school"

I rolled my eyes at his big brother speech and shoved both of earphones in to drown out whatever bullshit was playing on the radio of his busted up van.

Carver's Cafe, a job I got at sixteen because of my people skills and obvious need for money.

I was occasionally on time.

On my bad days, I was late.

When the anger consumed me, I couldn't work the way I wanted to and simply asked for the day off.

That morning my shift started ten minutes before I managed to get dressed. Today would be one of those bad days and I just knew that I had to try and cope with it.

I ran around towards the back, an entrance all employees used and those who were late, were thankful for. I prayed that Ann would let me off the hook once more. Ann was like am auntie I never had, she understood me. Just like me, her daddy was in the army. She understood the bad days and the really bad days.

I seemed to stare into space with both of my earbuds in to drown out whatever shit was on the radio.

The earbud in my left ear was ripped out causing me to blink out of my trance and turn, my hand reaching up to rub my ear and the immediate thought to react was to slap him.

"What the fuck is wrong with you?" I snapped  at Tyler who was stopped at a red light and was staring at me with my earbud dangling from his fingers, I snatched it back.

"What's got you so distracted ladybug?" I rolled my eyes at the childhood nickname he gave me when he first met me in the hospital. "Today is just not a good day, and on top of that I'm going to be late" He tugged at his bottom lip before driving through the green light, one hand on the wheel as he maneuvered through the partly empty streets.

The fall weather already began with the rain fogging up most of the windows. "That's understandable" I resisted the urge to punch his arm, wondering what he felt about our daddy being gone.

Once he pulled into the parking lot of the cafe I said my goodbye before hopping out of the van and ran towards the back before banging on the back door window.
