Tadashi Yamaguchi was always the second choice.

It didn't matter if he was being compared to someone or not, he was never picked first. He didn't hate his friend, Tsukishima Kei, he did, however envy him. Compared to Tsukishima, Yamaguchi wasn't spared a glance.

The people he liked, liked Tsukishima. The people he wanted to be friends with didn't want to be friends with him, he was weird, they said. Yet, when they had no place to sit at lunch they went to Yamaguchi. For parter projects he was only a back up plan, a second option if the first didn't work out.

Yamaguchi should be happy he was even considered for a second option. But he couldn't bring himself to smile at that fact even once. Because why would that make anyone happy? How can someone live with being second?

Why didn't anyone want to be with me first?

Was there something wrong with me?

Those two questions remained in his head every day for years. Yamaguchi wouldn't call himself selfish, he just wanted to be looked at, he wanted someone to see him and say 'wow, Yamaguchi is a cool guy, maybe I should talk to him.'

Yamaguchi couldn't handle hearing another, 'my friend isn't here today, I guess I can talk to Yamaguchi.'

No matter what anyone says, that doesn't feel right to him.

That was until Yamaguchi had met Y/n L/n.

Everyone liked Y/n, everyone wanted to be friends with Y/n. There wasn't anything relatively spectacular about the boy, he was just like anyone else. He was extremely handsome and kind, yes, but nothing standout-ish. So why did everyone prefer Y/n over Yamaguchi?

But shit, even Yamaguchi wanted to be friends with him. But like Y/n, there was nothing special about him either, so why should he even bother trying?

Apparently Y/n's family was extremely wealthy, maybe that's what attracted people's attention. It wasn't as if Y/n was a show off, or flaunted his stuff around for people to see, he kept to himself and didn't bother making an abundant amount a friends, he knew what they wanted.

He stuck with conversing only with his seat mates, wanting to have at least a couple people to rely on when he really needed it. For example, if he needed to borrow a pencil, or he had questions. He wanted someone who didn't expect anything grand in return for help.

Y/n L/n had learned that the hard way.

Maybe that's what caught Tsukishima's attention. Tsukishima hadn't openly told Yamaguchi his feelings for Y/n, but he knew they were there, he could see it as clear as day.

Yamaguchi knew he was nothing compared to Tsukishima, so he let his measly crush go. Why even try if Tsukishima was going to be picked in the end?

Y/n had continuously looked over at them, he was obviously interested in Tsukishima, Yamaguchi knew because who wouldn't? Tsukishima was quite, smart, and he could be a little blunt but that wasn't a bad thing sometimes. He was also very handsome in his own way, Tsukishima was perfect.

Tsukishima and Y/n were alike in some ways, maybe that's why Tsukishima liked him. Maybe Yamaguchi was too loud, or got to excited and it got annoying. Maybe that's why people preferred others over him.

But after week of Y/n's staring, Y/n had finally decided to make his move and started his walk over to where Tsukishima and Yamaguchi sat.

Yamaguchi stood up from his seat and pat his friend on the shoulder, "good luck." He encouraged, walking towards the classrooms door. It was lunch, so he was free to leave if he wanted to.

However, he was shocked to see Y/n had followed him out. Maybe he wasn't going to their desk, maybe he needed to use the restroom, perhaps meet a friend.

Yamaguchi payed no mind, continuing his walk until: "Excuse me, your Yamaguchi, right?"

Yamaguchi stopped in his tracks, turning to look behind him, nodding when he saw nobody, "Tadashi Yamaguchi, nice to meet you."

"I'm Y/n L/n, likewise." He said, holding a hand out to shake. He shoved his hands in his pockets afterwards, looking around and Yamaguchi had noticed a faint blush start to blossom on Y/n's cheeks. "I was wondering, if you'd like to be friends."

"Me? What about Tsukishima?" Yamaguchi asked quietly, peeking inside the classroom to see Tsukishima looking at them, Tsukishima looked away as soon as he was caught but Yamaguchi felt bad now.

"Tsukishima? The blond?" Y/n questioned, "I was more interested in becoming your friend...you seem nice and it's embarrassing to say aloud but...you're extremely handsome."

"Me?"

Y/n tilted his head, why wasn't Yamaguchi understanding his words clearly? He was talking to him after all. "Yes, who else?" He said softly.

"Anyone else."

"Well, I'm talking to you. Would you be my first real friend?"

First real friend? First real friend.

Yamaguchi nodded once, a smile on his face.
