My stomach churned and my head ached like it was being crushed from all sides. I think i was having a migraine.
I heard soft voices all around me. Every now and then i would hear familiar voices. I tried positioning my body in a way that i could hear clearly but just as i tried pulling up my knees a heatwave swept over me bringing piercing pain. I moaned in agony. I felt a cold hand holding my own tightly. I felt a bit relieved at the gesture.
The voices quietened as my pain slowly subsided. I saw a faint light and i forced my eyes to open. And there i was on a rigid bed circled by a few chairs which were occupied by people i couldn't quite make out. I squinted my eyes when my blurred vision started sharpening. Valerie rushed over to the bed and nervously held my hand that lay numb.
"Valerie i feel much better now, take me home" i croaked helplessly. My throat felt really bad. My mouth was dry .
Valerie rushed to the other side of the bed beside which was a bottle of water . She broke the seal , opened the cap and held it close to my dried lips.
"You are not even close to fine. The doctor said you bruised one of your knees and your belly is quite wounded too. "
valerie brushed off some stray strands of hair from my face
"you cut your forehead too.." she started welling up with tears.
"oh common i can hardly feel any of those, you underestimate me" i forced my self to grin.
valerie knew crying made me uncomfortable so she smiled and went outside wiping one of her tears that dribbled down her rosy cheeks.
I had entirely forgotten about my mystery guests who were sitting around the bed just as worried.
There was my driver who stole my ipod and the candy girl from the mall. I looked around for my dad.
"your dad left a few hours ago, pregnant lady trouble at the hospital." a velvety voice answered my curiosity.
My sassy driver stood up awkwardly and walked over to the bed with his hands tucked in to his denim jeans.
"valerie is right , you should rest for atleast a week in the hospital where they can keep an eye on you" he said plainly with out much emotion.
"which hospital is this ? " i asked plainly
"The wellston central" he answered with his hands still deep in his pockets
"And since when did you become my mother? " i asked wanting to ease the awkwardness.
He crossed his arms and gently shook his head
"i honestly dont care whether you are okay or not , besides i wouldn't be here if valerie had another mode of transportation. I had to drive you guys as you can imagine " he said annoyed.
"since i made you run i felt a bit responsible. Though really you can't blame me for your unhealthy body"
he defended himself further
"right" was my answer drenched in palpable disappointment.
A familiar theme song startled us all.
Brendan briskly shoved his hand in to his denim pockets and revealed a mobile phone glowing with music.
He flipped it open and walked off while his usual smug face returned as he spoke back to who ever it was calling.
Our not so warm conversation thus came to an end. Next up was candy girl.
I tried to make myself comfortable on the rough sheets and waited for her still a bit shaken by brendan's reasoning.
Soon she too stood up and stalked over to the bed with too long steps from where she stood. She wasn't trying to be funny but she inevitably was.
she flopped on the bed ,slightly aggravating my headache that was subsiding.
she smiled revealing all her pearly teeth and placed a colourful bag that read "don't curse" on my lap.
She motioned me to open it.
I pulled a pink string that was tied around its mouth almost excited.
candy.
"how thoughtful of you" i said with a grin."its not sweet. it's sour candy. Trust me You'll like it" She said looking pleased with her self for remembering my dislike towards sweets.
"haha really ? Best president ever " i said while unwrapping the sour candy handing her a long strip of it and popping a rather huge roll of it in my mouth.
I chewed the huge mass of sugar coated candy and my mouth burst with undescribable sourness.
"sweet mother of corn thats sour" i spoke trying to swallow the sour mass.
"told you so" she said chewing the piece of candy with ease. She smacked her lips presumably happy with its intense sourness and leaned back and laid down beside me.
A few silent seconds passed before she asked me
"So what's up?" casually.
I waited for the sourness to reside before i spoke. By which time Brendan walked inside again. He looked at both of us with a bag of candy casually tucked in to the same small bed.
He chuckled
"Lesbos" he said while making a face at my bed mate now chewing on a new piece of candy.
i didn't retort back like i normally would have. Instead i stared at the blue hospital blankets that suffocated me and thought to myself
is he bi-polar? one minute he acts like an inconsiderate bastard and then he comes in and cracks a dry joke. He probably is . Was my conclusion. He noticed my silence and gently kicked the bed
"cat got your tongue?" he asked again
ignoring his question i pulled the bag of treats and took out another roll of sour candy. I took my time unwrapping the sour delight. Brendan just stood their observing my peculiar behaviour.
Savouring the piece of candy that was melting away in my mouth i spoke " you should go, my lesbian friend here is more than enough company brendan"
I tossed a piece of candy to him
"I hear sour people love sour candy, you'll love it" i said smugly.
"It's Brian" He said.
He pulled his tongue out at me , shoved the candy in his pocket and bowed graciously.
"Your wish is not my command but you bore me so i was going to leave anyway." he said smugly . And skipped out of the room whistling.
i broke in to laughter.
Quite an exit.
And then it hit me . My ipod is still with him.
