3rd Person's POV
Team 7 and Tazuna decided to rest for a while, setting up a temporary camp in a secluded area.
"We'll have guard duty. Now that we know Tazuna's being targeted, we'll have to be on high alert. Y/n and Sasuke, you're up first. Naruto, you need to recover from your injury and Sakura, you stay by Tazuna's side, understood?" Kakashi ordered.
Y/n and Sasuke glanced at each other before nodding and standing up. Naruto whined softly, pouting. He wanted to talk to Y/n. But Sakura shut him up with a punch and Kakashi sat down, quietly conversing with Tazuna about the finer details of what they were up against.
Walking a few metres away from the camp, Sasuke and Y/n stood next to each other awkwardly.
"Maybe we should set up a few traps, for the areas we can't really guard. I know Kakashi-sensei is here but... just in case you know?" Y/n managed to say. They recalled how Sasuke pushed them out of the way and tensed up even more. Sasuke nodded wordlessly and went off to the other side, leaving Y/n alone with their thoughts.
'why did he push me out the way earlier? Did he think I was too weak? Or did he just want to do everything himself...? Argh, I can't work out why he did it! He never pushed Sakura out the way, he just stood in front of her. Then again, maybe because there was one extra person, he had to push me out the way? Does it mean something? Or am I overthinking again? Does he think I'm incompetent or-'
"Hey."
They jumped, startled by the voice. Looking up, their eyes met with Kakashi's.
"Hey... is something wrong?" Y/n asked, a little confused as to why he was here. Kakashi lowered his voice.
"Did you know this was going to happen?" He asked quietly. They paused, averting their eyes as they nodded meekly.
"I'm sorry... but I don't wanna stuff up the future too much you know? If I... I do something wrong, say too much, I could ruin everything... If you're concerned about what's to come, you don't have to worry," they said softly, slowly they lifted their head to look at Kakashi, "everyone comes out of these events stronger than before."
Kakashi didn't say anything for a few seconds. He was probably searching for any trace of uncertainty in their eyes. Sighing, he looked at others from the corner of his eye, "you're certain." It wasn't a question. He already knew.
"Then I guess we'll continue on with the mission. I'm trusting you, Y/n," he added, before turning on his heels and walking back to the others. His words brought a small smile onto their face, they were finally beginning to win him over.
The sound of grass crunching underfoot made Y/n look to the side.
"Yo," they said casually, turning to face the Uchiha. He didn't say anything. Only walked closer, before sitting down a metre away from them. Y/n's lips pursed, confused by his actions. But, they sat down beside him. They didn't speak for a while, each instead focusing on the trees or the sounds around them. Of course, they didn't speak until Y/n got restless.
"Hey... um... Sasuke?" They asked tentatively, their leg bouncing up and down- a nervous habit of theirs. The boy in question had enough courtesy to look at them.
"Why did you push me out of the way when the demon brothers were attacking?"
Sasuke looked away, his hands toying with the kunai knife in his hands.
"Because... he was too close," he ended up saying. This didn't satisfy them.
"What do you mean 'too close'? I would've defended myself! Did you think I was-" they was cut off by Sasuke sighing frustratedly.
"If you think I thought you were incompetent then you're stupider than the dobe," he muttered, staring straight ahead. Y/n frowned,
"First of all, he's not stupid, just naive to things because he never had anyone to really teach him. Second of all, you still haven't answered my question! What reason would you have to push me out the way?"
His eyes narrowed and he glared at Y/n half-heartedly.
"I already told you. He was too close. I don't think you're incompetent, but you were scared."
Y/n tensed, scowling at the ground, "well sorry for having feelings." they huffed, turning their head to the side. Sasuke sighed again, getting increasingly more aggravated.
"I don't think you're weak... but you wouldn't have been able to move or defend in time. You were trembling."
They didn't look at him. Instead, they cursed themself. 'way to go, Y/n, oh how talented you are!! So scared even the duck-butt noticed your trembling. Aren't we amazing? Spectacular? Oh Jashin...'
"But," Sasuke continued, "why does it matter to you?"
This snapped them out of their thoughts. They looked at him in disbelief,
"What do mean 'why does it matter to me'? Of course, it matters! You pushed me out the way of an attack when technically, you didn't need to. You could've gotten hurt or something. I'd rather get hurt than watch you have to suffer in my place." Y/n admitted.
Sasuke blinked, caught off-guard by the sudden confession. When it all processed, he rolled his eyes, "I didn't get hurt, moron. Besides, I feel the way the same way you do," he said indifferently before standing up and walking off.
'I.... h u h? what just happened?!' Y/n thought, 'feels the same way I do...? wait a diddly darn minute does that mean he doesn't want me to get hurt-'
"SaSuKe cOmE bAcK what does that mean?!" They called out, hurriedly standing up. "Does this mean you actually have feelings-" a red anime annoyed tick mark thingo (y'all know the one) appeared on Sasuke's head as he turned around to face Y/n. He glared at them darkly, steadily walking back towards them.
Y/n grinned slyly, "haha, duckass you wouldn't do anything-" they began cockily. Then, a flurry of ninja stars came at them pinning them to the tree behind them, Sasuke slowly getting closer and closer.
"aaAaAAA dOn'T hURt mE sAsuKE pLEAse!"
