Three days later
"Yes. Ye- oh, absolutely. It's okay, take your time. Just text me the results."
Genevieve ended the call with the forensic scientist just in time, when she heard the high-pitched squeal from a speaker nearby. She looked towards the commissioner as he tapped on the microphone twice.
The female officer was standing in the midst of the city square. An outdoor press conference was being held right now, with the two addressors being DI Owen Miller and the Chief of Police. They were seated and a table was placed before them. Two microphones sat on top. The commissioner leaned towards the one nearest to him, so his voice could reach even the furthest of the spectators.
A large crowd consisting of the city's residents had been gathered at a distance from them. Their outstretched arms held smartphones which were ready to film, and their uneasy anticipation was quite evident on their faces.
The security of the place was very tight too. Several police cars surrounded the public square. Police officers roamed about in the area, and a few snipers were positioned on the terraces of the plaza.
Genevieve and Alec stood side by side nearby the tables. Whilst she had her hands clasped behind her in a posture of discipline, Alec had his hands tucked away in his pockets like usual. The two weren't on talking terms, or rather, Genevieve wasn't talking to him. At all. She wasn't participating in banters either, nor did she respond to his jabs with a fiery remark of her own. She was way past that, because her hatred towards him was very real now.
"I want to thank you all for your patience. I'm sure this was a stressful month for all of us. With our previous mayor's death, the bank robbery, and now the murder of our dear officer, we have all been shaken to the core."
Tears pushed on the backside of her eyes, and Genevieve did everything in her power to suppress them. She never even got the chance to mourn over Samuel properly. The only relief was that his funeral was coming up in a few days' time, and she knew she'd attend it no matter what.
For the meantime, she chose to shake the tears away and distract herself. She looked around the square to notice the shopkeepers and cashiers standing outside the doors of their shops, while they watched the commissioner with expectation. A few of them held their recording devices up as well.
Alec glanced down his shoulder to see a disturbed Genevieve. She had distanced herself from him emotionally and it was quite noticeable. Even during the times where the two would be alone together to work on their case, Genevieve would keep to herself. She would only talk to him if it was of extreme importance, otherwise she'd be skimming through files or footages wordlessly.
Personally, he felt that she was overreacting, since accusing Thomas because of a term of endearment was outrageous. But looking at the circumstances now, Alec knew that he deserved the silent treatment.
