My face grew expressionless as I stared at Mrs. Matthews. "You don't say?" I said, sarcasm dripping from my voice.

Mike's body shook as he chuckled. Agitated by his nonchalantness toward the situation, I flicked him, causing him to groan as he cupped the back of his head in pain. This really wasn't the time to be laughing, but I didn't think it through when I hit him. Mike was extremely sensitive, and it slipped my mind.

"Shit Mikey, I forgot." I said, wrapping my arms around him and kissing his head softly.

"That hurt, Aid." He frowned.

"You guys are too cute." Mrs. Matthews cooed from the chair she proceeded to sit on. She crossed her legs and dusted off her skirt, then clasped her hands over her thighs. She flipped her longer than usual bangs out of her face and changed the subject. "So Aiden, tell me. How is it that you can use lightning?"

"I have no idea Mrs. Matthews! That's what I've been trying to say!" I replied, walking over to the chess that lay at the foot of the bed, propping myself down on it.

Mike followed and sat next to me, then slid his arm around me to pull me closer. I smiled as I took a quick glance at his forearm, and lo and behold the wound that had once graced his bicep was gone. My hand traced over the spot as I stared at his bicep in disbelief.

"Your wound. It's gone. How is that possible?" I asked as my gaze slowly met his.

"Like my mom said Aid, we're not normal human beings." He smiled, showing his braces in the process.

"So, what are you then?" I asked.

Mrs. Matthews scoffed. "Well you don't have to make us sound like freaks Aiden."

My eyes grew wide. "N-no I didn't mean it like that! I-I was just. ."

She raised her hand, stopping me.

"It's okay" She smiled, showing me her amazing white teeth.

"We're wielders." Mike replied.

I stared at him for a second, brows furrowed. "What's a wielder?"

"A wielder is someone who has the ability to control elements," Mike's mom answered.

I nodded slowly. Okay, so they were beyond anything I ever thought existed. I focused on the ground as I gathered my thoughts. "So, you control lightning."

"Yes" Mrs. Matthews answered.

"Wait. You said certain elements. Does that mean there are more people like you who can control other elements?" I asked as my gaze met hers.

"That's correct." She answered swiftly. I couldn't tell if she was was happy that I finally knew about a secret that they probably went through lengths to hide, but her eyes were glowing with a brightness that I had never seen before. Looking over I saw that Mike also had the same look in his eyes.

All of a sudden my heart felt heavy and the feeling of hurt engulfed me. "Why didn't you tell me this before?" I said, barely over a whisper.

I felt his body stiffen next to me and I glanced over to see his eyes. They were filled to the brim with guilt.

 "I'm sorry."

"It's not his fault Aiden." I heard Mrs. Matthews respond. "Non wielders aren't supposed to know about us. And as far as we knew, you weren't one."

I stared at my hands as I fidgeted. "As far as I knew, I wasn't either."

"I know." Mrs. Matthews stood from her chair. "We had Mike test you a while back."

My head snapped up. "What?"

She frowned. "Yeah. It was around the time you two first started dating."

I looked over to Mike to see him staring at the ground. His brows were furrowed like he was concentrating on something.

"Mike" I said, nudging his shoulders.

He looked at me from the corner of his eyes, then went back to staring at the ground.

I forced a smile. "It's not your fault."

"Yes it is."

I frowned. "How is it your fault?"

"Because." He got up and walked to the other side of the room, facing the giant window.

"Because what, Mikey?" I asked, sounding a little more desperate than I should've.

He turned to face me, "Like my mom said Aiden, non wielders aren't supposed to know about us. Me falling in love with you risked the chance of exposing us for what we could do." I could see all the emotions swirling in Mike's eyes as he stood there staring at me. Guilt, sympathy, self-loathing and sadness were plastered on his face so obviously that if you missed it, you had to be blind.

I couldn't even look him in the eye after he said that. I lowered my gaze to the floor, fidgeting with my fingers. Mrs. Matthews flipped her bangs over then looked to Mike.

"Everything happens for a reason Mike." She said, getting up and adjusting her skirt. My eyes followed her movements as she smiled at me then walked over to the door of the room. My curiosity got the best of me, and I shot up to my feet. I'd never been to Mike's house, and now that I was here, I really wanted to know what it looked like.

Mrs. Matthews turned the knob.
