It has been a couple of days since the Panthers' game. You are with Mitch and Danny. You are impatiently waiting for news on the all star competition. You are engaged in a debate with Danny on whether or not it's going to be you or him. At least Mitch is acting as a moderator. Maybe your thoughts about the all star competition could be wrong entirely.
"I'm telling you Danny you have more skills than I do," You retort. You can tell that Mitch is enjoying listening to you. Danny is about to say something but he is cut off by your ringtone. You quickly answer it.
"This is Jaylyn Paris. What can I do for you?" You can feel the tension build in the room.
"Jay you have been selected for the all star team," Sheldon remarks.
"Thank you for letting me know," You respond as you hang up. Mitch gives you a curious look.
"I'm sorry Danny you were right about me joining the all star team," It has been a week since the announcement. You are getting ready for the all star game. Thankfully Mitch, your mum, and your dad are here to support you. Your mum puts the last bit of foundation on. It's going to be interesting playing hockey with some makeup on. Ten minutes later you have arrived at the red carpet. You are suddenly hit by a wave of nervousness. At least Mitch is on the red carpet with you. You latch onto his arm.
"Sorry Mitch," You whisper. You are not used to this much attention even as the first woman in the NHL.
"Don't worry about it. You're not used to this much attention," Mitch responds. Five minutes later you have made it to the media area. You are soon swarmed by reporters.
"Jaylyn how does it feel to be a part of the all star skills competition?" one of them points a microphone towards you.
"It feels like a dream come true," You reply. After thirty minutes of questions you finally have the opportunity to get ready. You can feel the stares of the other players but you are used to it. You take the spare seat next to Ovechkin. You quickly get your gear on. You soon find yourself chatting to him. Like Ilya he is happy to talk to you. It puts your mind at ease knowing you've got someone to support you. Five minutes later you are on the ice for the stick handling competition. It's a good thing you are going first. You get to work. It doesn't take you long to get through the obstacle course. After thirty minutes of small skills competitions you are getting ready for the east versus west game. You get ready for the face off. You can feel the stare of William Karlsson. His stare is a cross between hope and curiosity. The umpire drops the puck between you two. You are only just able to snatch it off him. You get to work on getting it down towards the goal.
"Jay," Ovechkin calls out. You pass the puck to him. After some back and forth between you, Sidney Crosby and Ovechkin you are ready to score. You hear the familiar crash of your stick hitting the puck. It sails past the goaltender's head. The goal horn sounds. The only thing that ruins your celebration is the fact that you have to take the next face off. William is just a little quicker than you this time.
"Oh come on," You mutter as you try your best to get the puck back.
"Don't worry about it, Jaylyn," William responds. You are soon successful. After fifteen minutes of demanding game play the period has come to an end. The game is tied
Despite the challenges of playing against the rest of the all stars you are enjoying yourself. You are surprised that they allowed Mitch to join you.
"So Jay how are you handling the game?" He asks.
"It's been fun in a challenging way. I'm off for the next period by the way," You respond. At least you will be able to rest for a bit.
"Hey Jay You are doing well," Andrei Vasilevskiy remarks as he approaches you and Mitch.
"Thank you Andrei," You say. At least the others on your team are complimenting you. After seven minutes of talking to the team the game has started up again. Your attention is soon drawn to Andrei who has made a wonderful gloved save. Nineteen minutes later you are getting ready to take the ice again.
"Good Luck Jay," Mitch remarks.
"I don't need luck. I have a good team," You retort. The response makes Mitch smile. It gives you a little bit more confidence. Five minutes later you are ready for the face off. It will be fun getting the puck off of Jonathan Toews. The face off ends up being an all out wrestling match but you manage to make it out successfully. The other team's defence get to work but you are able to weave your way through them.
"Jay I'm open," Anders Lee calls out as he gets ready to back you up.
"Thank you Anders," You use the opportunity to pass the puck to him. You can feel Mitch's eyes settle on you. It's a feeling you haven't come across since you joined the Leafs. After thirty seconds of movement Anders passes the puck to Nikita Kucherov. He soon gets it to the goal.
"I'm going for the crossbar," Nikita announces. He shoots the puck and you hear the familiar crash of the puck hitting the crossbar. You use the confusion to send the puck over Marc-André Fleury's leg. The goal horn rips through the air. You seem to be the luckiest player when it comes to goal scoring in the all stars game. Fifteen minutes later the game has tied and you get the feeling that you will score another buzzer beater. Nikita has just passed you the puck. He should have passed it to Anders.
"Anders," You make your intentions known.
"I'm ready," He confirms. You pass him the puck and he scores just as the buzzer sounds. You are proud of your assist. Five minutes later you are getting ready to go home.
"Jay you did well," Anders remarks.
"Yeah but you did better," You respond. You try your best to deflect all of the compliments. It is the day after the all stars game. You are celebrating with Mitch. You are nibbling at the food that Mitch ordered.
"So what were your thoughts about the all star match," Mitch asks.
"I would rather not talk about it because I've had enough time," You have had enough of talking about the game.
"Well what do you want to talk about then," Mitch responds.
"Did you enjoy the game?" you ask.
"Yes. You and the others played well. Ten minutes later you are wrapped around Mitch's arm as you both walk through the streets of Toronto. You are lost in your thoughts about your life at the Toronto Maple Leafs. You are impressed at how far you have come since joining the youth team. So much has happened. The fact that you are with Mitch makes you feel even more happy. Mitch can see that you are happy so he shows you a broad smile. You return the favour.
