Patton walked to school like he did every day. He lived in the bad part of town, out where the bus wouldn't go, so he had to walk every day. His dad never offered to drive him, and even if he did, he'd probably just walk. His dad had a gambling issue and was deep in debt, so Patt always had to be careful. On the way to school, he met up with his best friend, Virgil, and they walked to school together.
The school day progressed as usual. He went to class, then helped out a few other people with assignments after school. He tried to stay away from home as much as possible. Around 7 p.m., he parted ways with Virgil. "Be careful Patt." Virgil said. "I will." he replied, then headed home. As soon as Virgil was out of sight, Patton noticed a van following him. He tried to ignore it and picked up the pace, trying to get home quickly. The van keeps following him. It speeds up and pulls out in front of him, someone wearing a mask gets out, and before he knows it, Patt has a bag over his head and is being shoved into the back of the van. He climbs in, afraid he might have a gun to his head if he doesn't obey. As soon as he gets in, someone ties his hands and feet together. He tries to fight back, letting instinct take over, but someone holds a cloth over his mouth and nose and he drifts off to sleep.
He wakes up and tries to move but seems to be tied up, he looks around a little, trying to not move his head too much. He sees the outline of people in front of him, their backs turned to him. He tries to hear what they're saying.
In his head: "did I hear ransom note?" He tears up, knowing his dad wouldn't pay. At this point, he's just given up completely. He lets his tears flow freely, not caring if people notice. He doesn't know how long he cried for, but he didn't care. All he cared about was that he wouldn't get to go back to school. He wouldn't see Virgil again or get to help people anymore.
"They probably won't even notice that I'm missing…" this thought just made him cry more. It made him miss even the things he usually hated. His dad, math class, everything. He cried for a few hours before someone slapped him and told him to suck it up. He was about to cry more but it started to thunderstorm. Thunderstorms always helped him calm down, and it didn't fail now. His head cleared and he could actually think. He tried to look around for any windows and saw light streaming in from somewhere.
"Day! Surely someone knows I'm gone, right?" He tried to keep his hopes up, holding to this hope. Holding to the hope that someone knew and cared that he was missing. He held on to this for three days, even when he heard people talking about just killing him he tried to hold on, but it got harder and harder to hold on to the hope he'd survive. By now it had been about five days. Five days with no sign of rescue. Five days without food or water. Five days of holding on to an empty hope. Five days of holding back tears. Five days of wishing for the impossible.
By the seventh day, he had completely given up hope. He just wanted them to kill him already. He heard new voices but didn't pay attention. Not until he felt someone untie him then put a gun to his head. "Move" they said, so he did. He kept walking, barely able to move since he hadn't been able to for a week. He kept walking and eventually felt sunlight. The person told him to stop, so he did. Someone handed over money and the person behind him shoved him forward. Someone caught him and helped him back to a car. Someone opened the door and he got in. The car started and they drove off, about a minute later he heard police sirens and gunshots. Someone reached over and pulled the bag off Patton's head, he blinked a lot before his eyes adjusted.
"V-virgil?" He croaked out, his voice hoarse from no water for a week. Virgil hugged him. "Yeah, it's me Patt." He said. Patton started crying again, this time happy tears. "Hey, it's ok. You're safe now Patt. I promise." He hugged Patton tighter, Patt looked around to see who was driving. To his surprise, there were four other people there. He knew them all, of course. He helped them every day after classes. Logan, Roman, Remus, and Janus. Logan was driving (probably a good thing since the rest of them weren't great drivers), Roman was in the passenger seat, Remus and Janus were in the backseat, and Virgil was sitting right next to Patt.
"You all came?" He croaked out. Virgil nodded. "Why wouldn't we? As soon as I found out you were missing, I started looking for you. These guys wouldn't shut up until I told them what was going on." Patton teared up and hugged Virgil tighter. They stopped at McDonald's and got lots of food, then went back to Virgil's house.
