SHE TURNED SIXTEEN that day. She didn't like birthdays, not even her own birthday. They reminded her of her lonely childhood, where the only present she would have was a hammer found in the trash can in the hallway.
She had never really had friends, so she never received expensive and beautiful gifts for her birthday. She had never had a birthday party. She couldn't even go in bars because of her young age.
Long story short, she loathed her birthday.
That day, on the other hand, was different. It wasn't a school school day, it was Sunday, so, after she woke up and did her morning routine, she walked to her boyfriend's house — or RV, to be more specific.
She carelessly opened the door, to find her almost-one-year boyfriend on his bed, watching a program she didn't really care about.
"Morning, beautiful." he turned his head towards her and smiled.
She gently moved onto the bed, climbing on it, pulling off her heavy boots and wrapping her arms around Beck Oliver's body.
He kissed her cheek. "Do you know what day it is?"
"Don't." Jade warned, her head hidden in the crook of his neck.
"It's your birthday!" Beck sang playfully and stood up.
"Ugh, I hate you, Beck." she groaned.
"I love you too."
He bent over to a drawer, opening it and pulling out a black box with a sign that read 'My Jade's Birthday' at which she couldn't help rolling her eyes playfully.
He put the box on the bed. "Open it."
Jade studied the odd box for a moment. It was quite big, which meant it contained something of the same size. She put it in between her pale hands and lifted it up. The sound it made meant that the gift wasn't just one, but there were at least three objects inside of it.
Putting it back on the soft bed, she removed the lid and opened her eyes. The sight made her yelp in joy and cover her mouth with her hands.
"Beck. . ."
Her voice was small and soft as a whisper, but it had all the happiness she could ever feel.
It wasn't the gift every girlfriend would have expected from their boyfriend. It wasn't an enormous bouquet of bright red roses or a diamond necklace.
In front of her there were, all trapped securely in transparent boxes, seven pairs of pointy, sharp and dangerous scissors. All in various colors.
"Do. . . do you like them?" Beck sheepishly questioned in a murmur, rubbing the back of his neck.
"I love them." Jade turned towards him and wrapped her hands around his body, pulling him in a warm hug. "Thank you."
After she draw back from the hug, she picked up one of the scissors, unwrapping them so that she could admire them better, touching the blade in wonder and amazement.
Seven scissors, he bought her. Black, white, blue, red, green, purple and grey. He spent money for her, to buy seven stupid, yet fascinating pairs of scissors.
Jade didn't say anything more, she just kissed him with all the love and all the passion she could, and hold him tight.
If she would have been any other girl, she would have thrown the gift on his face and dumped him. But she wasn't any other girl. She didn't want roses or diamonds for her birthday. She loved him and he loved her. That was enough for them.
