We were a proud kind. Not that much different than the humans. We mated with them and have always fought beside them in times of trouble. Except as history always tells us. Humans can be disloyal and unreliable when it comes to gaining the power, they think the deserve.
First, they started poking their nose where it did not belong. They attempted to govern us and try to tell us how to live our lives. Our elders did not take to kindly to that. We have always lived by the ways our ancestors had. My father always told me. "If it was good enough for them then we shouldn't ask for anything more."
I was thirteen when it happened. Just a young pup playing hide and seek with my friends why the young mothers and some warriors watched us. It was a favorite game because it also taught us agility and stealth. How to escape and hide from enemies or potential threats.
An airplane had flown above us. To me it seemed like it was a bit close but maybe it was a pilot in training. Braden snuck up behind me and pounced on my tail. The little shit I was distracted. I saw a lot of pups and adults stop what they were doing when a weird smell hit the air and then the sound of metal on metal. I looked at Braden not knowing if I should go run to my parents at the pack house or climb higher up in the tree. When I heard the explosion all I could do is run towards the village. I feared the worst.
I started running towards the village. Braden and Ambrose right behind me. My mom and dad were at home working on expanding the hospital ward of the pack house. The ground was shaking under my feet as another bomb went off to the north of us. I stepped into a clearing of the forest and put my hands out to stop my friends from going further. Our home was in ruins and my parents had gone to the great forest in the sky.
That was the day the great war started. Braden's dad, Linus, my dad's second in command and best friend helped hide us away in a deep underground cellar. It was small but it was better than being found by someone that wanted to hurt us. There was a hospital room for the injured, a nursery room for the pups, and a main room for the women and older pups.
During the few months that we were stuck down there we were joined by other wolves. They had lost their homes and families and had nowhere else to go. The first newcomer was a pup of barely one. Linus found him curled up in a blanket in a tree hallow with nobody around. He could not just leave him there to die. I knew as soon as I saw the pup that he was special to me. I was going to take care of him. He was alone in the world just like me. I spent my time playing with him and making sure he ate well.
After the war, we started to build a new village. Hidden away in the dense forest we use to live by. We had to live in hiding now but everyone knows the best place to hide from a human is right in front of them.
