Most stories start with how it all began.

This story will begin with how it all ended.

This is not a happily ever after.

He stood at the edge of the roof with tears pouring from his chocolate eyes. He didn't bother wiping them away--in a few seconds they wouldn't matter. Nothing would matter.

Calum supposed this was the moment when a concerned friend would burst through the door and snatch him from the edge just in time, but the door didn't even creak as the wind blew through Calum's hair and nudged him closer to the edge of oblivion.

His eyes closed slowly, the sensation of helplessness overwhelming his body more than ever before.

He didn't want to die.

And yet there he was--atop a seven story building about to plunge to his death.

His death. Images of his friends, bystanders, his family, finding him on the pavement flashed through his mind. He took an subconscious step back. How could he do that to them? He thought about how horrified they'd be; he was under no illusion that no one cared for him--his bandmates were his brothers and they loved each other.

Love. Different kinds of images flashed through his mind at a mile a minute, all with a familiar theme--Ashton. An unseen force lifted his other foot a step away from the building's ledge without his knowledge.

"It'd kill me, you know?"

A voice startled him all the way from the edge and towards the middle of the rooftop.

Ashton stood staring at him wide eyed, holding in tears and wearing the expression that Calum could easily identify as fear.

Calum thought about what Ashton said.

"No it wouldn't, Ash." His voice croaked and the tears previously streaming down his face increased.

Ashton scoffed and ran a hand down his face but Calum didn't miss the redness of his eyes or the unmistakeable way his lip quivered.

"Calum--" He stopped, letting his tears get the best of him unashamedly. "Calum will you come lay down with me?"

"Why? So you can apologize? Or so you can pretend you feel the same out of pity?? I don't want your pity Ashton!" He choked. "I just want you to love me." He sobbed as he sank to his knees on the rough concrete rooftop. "Just love me Ash, please, please, please I'd do anything to make you love me."

Ashton was immediately in front of him crouching down hugging him so tightly Calum was having trouble getting air into his lungs to supply his sobs. He didn't say anything--just held him.

In truth, what would he say? He vowed to Calum a long time ago he'd never lie to him. And yet stll, tears streaked his now rosy cheeks for a reason other than his best friend almost killing himself. In the end, he said the only thing on his mind and the only words that would physically pass his lips--

"I have to love you, Calum. I don't control my feelings anymore and I'm so confused. But I'm not confused by this feeling. I know what it is. It's love."
