Severus Snape was a ten-year-old boy living down Spinner's End. His house was not the most luxurious and his parents, not the friendliest. And he had a secret. He was a wizard.
Severus Snape was not the most handsome boy. His black hair was greasy, a bit untidy. His eyes were beetle black. They weren't warm, but they weren't cold or passive. Yet. His body was thin, and ludicrously bat-like especially when he wore his oversized cloak that would flap about giving him an effect as so.
Severus Snape was lonely. He didn't have friends. How he wished for them. There were children in the area, but none more fascinating than one girl. That girl had long, dark red hair, and her eyes were breathtakingly green. This girl was Lily Evans.
Lily Evans was not entirely fascinating just because of her beauty. No, Severus was fascinated with her because she resembled him. He had seen the signs. He knew it. He had known it since he had first spied on her. Lily Evans was a witch.
Lily Evans had an elder sister. Petunia Evans. Petunia had not shown any signs that she was like her sister. She, Severus concluded, was definitely not a witch. She was a Muggle. He had little to do with her.
Lily Evans had no idea what she was. But she enjoyed the feeling of flying from swings, or turning flowers to beautiful or horrible things, depending on how the viewer took it.
One day, Severus couldn't take it anymore. He needed to talk to this girl at last, tell her what she really was, give her the truth. He was greedy, he needed to talk.
"Lily, don't do it!" shrieked Petunia, as Lily went higher and higher on the swing before letting herself fly. She stayed in the air far too long and landed much too lightly. Lily giggled. Petunia, meanwhile, dragged her sandals on the dirt to stop herself from swinging and stood up. She put her hands on her hips and said to Lily, "Mummy told you not to! Mummy said you weren't allowed to, Lily!"
"But I'm fine," said Lily, still giggling. "Tuney, look at this. Watch what I can do."
Petunia looked around, as if she wanted to confirm that nobody else was watching before she looked at Lily. She couldn't see Severus; he had hidden himself well. Then, she advanced towards Lily, who had picked up a fallen flower from the bush behind which, Severus lurked.
Lily waited before Petunia was close before revealing the flower from her hand. It was opening and closing its petals like a bizarre, many-lipped oyster.
"Stop it!" Petunia shrieked.
"It's not hurting you," said Lily, indignantly, but all the same, she closed her hand on it and threw it to the ground.
"It's not right," said Petunia. Her eyes were fixed on the flower on the ground. "How do you do it?" she asked. There was clear desire in her voice.
Severus could no longer grasp himself.
"It's obvious, isn't it?" he said, emerging from the bush. Petunia, evidently surprised by his abrupt appearance, shrieked with fear and ran back toward the swings. Lily was startled, but she remained where she was. Severus felt regretful now that he had revealed himself to the girls. His face flushed slightly with colour.
"What's obvious?" demanded Lily.
Severus was nervous. He had to do this right. He glanced at Petunia, who was still standing cautiously by the swings before addressing Lily.
"I know what you are," he said.
"What do you mean?"
"You're ... you're a witch," Severus whispered.
Lily looked affronted.
"That's not a very nice thing to say to somebody," she said, clearly disgusted.
She turned away from Severus and walked, nose in the air, towards her sister.
"No!" said Severus. His face was brightly pink. He flapped after the two girls; his appearance comically batlike. The sisters considered him, united in disapproval. They both held onto the swing poles, as if they would protect them from Snape.
"You are," Severus told Lily. He completely avoided Petunia, as if she didn't exist. "You are witch," he pressed on. "I've been watching you for a while. But there's nothing wrong with that. My mum's one and I'm a wizard."
Petunia laughed coldly.
"Wizard!" she shrieked, her courage returning as she recovered from the shock she had received on Severus's arrival. "I know who you are. You're that Snape boy. They live down Spinner's End by the river," she told Lily. Evidently, she didn't think that the address was a good recommendation. "Why have you been spying on us?"
"Haven't been spying," Severus retorted. He was feeling hot and uncomfortable in his mismatched clothing, especially due to the glazing sun above. "Would spy on you anyway," he added spitefully, "you're a Muggle."
Petunia certainly didn't understand the term 'Muggle', but from the tone Snape used while talking to her, she knew it wasn't a great thing.
"Lily, come one, we're leaving!" she said shrilly. Lily obeyed without further delay. She glared at Severus as she left.
Severus was bitterly disappointed. It hadn't quite gone as he'd planned. Nothing had gone the way he'd planned.

A/N: This fanfiction will have a lot of detail from the book 'Snape – A Definitive Reading by Lorrie Kim'. I'd definitely recommend the book. Especially if, like me, Snape's your favourite character.
