Everyone looked around at each other.
'What the hell,' said Jade. Grey was running to a nearby panel and pressing buttons on it.
'Where the hell did two extra people come from?' said Ash.
'Is it a sensor problem?' asked Moss.
'No, the records are saying that only 8 cryo tubes broke. Give me a minute I'm checking something,' said Grey.
Everyone stood awkwardly around the center table of the cafeteria.
'Oh god,' said Grey.
'What happened?' everyone yelled in unison.
'The ship's course has been diverted. We're way off course,' said Grey.
'So, fix it,' said Jett.
'I can't. Too many of the ships systems are not responding. We need to fix them before I can fix the course,' said Grey. 'Sorry guys but our tasks just got a lot more time sensitive.'
'Wait wait, if only 8 people are supposed to be awake, do we have two stowaways? And even if they are stowaways why the hell would they divert the course? It would kill everyone,' said Scarlett.
'I don't think they were planning on killing themselves,' said Sage quietly. 'Unfortunately, this is something that we should have expected.' Everyone looked at him.
'Explain,' said Grey.
There has been an occurrence on the Federation's ships recently. A few ships have gone off course and disappeared. We weren't able to find out much about them or what happened to them,' said Sage.
'So, what corporate espionage or what? What is the motive here?' asked Hazel.
'We have no idea,' replied Sage. 'These ships just up and disappeared.'
'And if we don't hurry, we might be the next one,' said Grey. 'Everyone just do your damn tasks and we can get the ship back on course.'
'Doing tasks is not gonna help Grey,' said Jade. 'These two imposters among us, whoever they are, are gonna be actively sabotaging us and trying to stop us every step of the way. I say we try to find out who those two are and dump them out of the airlock first.'
'There's no time damn it. This ship was supplied with a very specific amount of fuel. It was enough to get us to Mira and nowhere else. The longer we waste fuel running off in some random direction, the less chance we have of making it to Mira,' yelled Grey. 'We have a very small margin of error here that's decreasing by the second.'
'Look if there are 8 people fixing and 2 people sabotaging, we should definitely get it fixed faster than they can sabotage systems, right?' said Ash. 'If it is as dire as Grey says let's focus on fixing first then.'
'How much time do we have?' asked Hazel.
'12 hours,' said Grey. 'If we stay on our current course without correcting, we have 12 hours before we lose too much fuel to make it to Mira.'
'So, stop the ship,' said Moss.
'We're travelling at 90% the speed of light, stopping would waste just as much fuel,' said Grey.
'So, turn back to Earth,' said Jade.
'Same problem. We either fix this and make it to Mira or we die,' said Grey. 'So, for the love of all the innocent civilians on board, do your damn tasks right now.'
'We can try a buddy system,' suggested Sapphire. 'We go in pairs of two. If one starts acting suspicious the other can report it.'
'Great idea unless we happen to assign both the imposters to the same pair. In which case we have fuck all chance of finding them out and it will make fixing a hell of a lot harder,' said Jade.
