In one wintery night, people celebrated the Christmas season. Snow falling from the sky, Christmas lanterns and Christmas lights lit up the whole place with joyful laughs of the people. There’s a one family who has only one child. A 9 years old beautiful girl named Stephanie.

Stephanie is just a normal little girl with no worries. She’s cheerful, stubborn sometimes and a lovely girl.

Stephanie and her family went to a park with a nearby playground. She was jumping with joy when she saw the playground. “Mommy! Daddy! Can I go to the playground?” Stephanie asked with so much enthusiasm in her voice.

“Okay sweetie, just be careful alright?”

    “And don’t talk to a stranger sweetie…”

Stephanie nod happily and skip all her way to the playground. She went to the swing and swings herself with happiness. After a few minutes, Stephanie heard someone crying. She stood up and look around to where that voice comes from.

Then, Stephanie saw a lonely boy crying in the seesaw while hugging his knees. She was debating at first wether she would approach or not but she did it anyway. “Are you okay?” Stephanie asked.

The boy flinched and wiped his tears away. “I’m fine…” the boy said, trying to act tough in front of the girl. Stephanie looks deeply at the boy. “Mommy said that boys like you need some comfort…”

    “I don’t need comfort…”

    “Yes you do…”

“No…I’m strong and I can handle myself.”

    “Stop pretending…”

The boy was taken aback from what Stephanie said. With courage, Stephanie went closely to the boy and gave him a warm hug. The boy didn’t know how to respond and just stood there frozen from his spot. However, he like what he is feeling right now. Warm and secure in someone’s embrace.

“Life can be tough too…pain is always there. So cry and let it all out. From now on, I will be your friend and always there for you”. At last, he’s tears came out and broke out into sobs. “There, there buddy…” Stephanie said and pats he’s back to reassured him that everything will be alright.

And that’s where their friendship starts…

As the following days goes by, Stephanie knew why Mike, the boy, was crying that night. His parents were fighting and planning a divorce. How awful could that be. Stephanie did not know what to say but one thing that she’s sure is to not leave the boy alone.

Every day, they will meet each other in the playground. They talk, they tease, they stumbled and cried together but laugh afterwards. Stephanie would invite his best friend Mike to her place to eat some delicious cookies that her mom baked and play sports with her dad. Mike was so lucky that he met Stephanie in that wintery night. It was his best Christmas gift in his entire life.

3 years passed by, their relationship starting to grow. Stephanie’s feelings for Mike had grown too…but she’s scared to tell how she feels about him. She’s scared because their friendship might be broken so she kept it to herself. And lastly, Mike had so many admirers in their neighborhood. Some other girls would squeal if they stroll down the street. This made Stephanie loose her chance to confess. She was thinking that maybe Mike has a crush on somebody else in the neighborhood. If he does…then Stephanie is one-sided.

There are times that she asked him if he had a crush around the neighborhood. Stephanie wait eagerly for his reply. “Hmmm, yes…I do have someone I like. She’s very cute and pretty. I think I’m head over heels for her.”

“Oh…well she’s lucky.” Stephanie said with her head down. Trying her best not to let her tears out. “She is…”, Stephanie fastened her pace leaving Mike alone, confused. He called her but Stephanie didn’t look back.

Mike suddenly chuckled, “that dumb Stephanie…she’s the girl that I’m talking about.” Mike knows that Stephanie was upset and jealous but he finds it cute. Mike’s phone rang and he looks at the caller ID before pressing the green button. “Mom, what is it?”

“You need to come home right now. I have to tell you something.”

“Mom, I still have to go to Stephanie’s house. Can it wait?” Mike said through his phone.

“No son, it can’t wait. Come here now.”

Before Mike could speak, his mom ended the call. He had no choice but to go home. He texted Stephanie right away…

“Steph…something urgent came up and my mom wants me home. I’ll visit you another time”

    Sent

As the sun goes down, Stephanie was staring at the ceiling, debating herself if she will reply to his text or not. She groaned. “Uuuugghhh….I’m so stupid!!! Of course he would never like me. He only sees me as his best friend and nothing more.” Stephanie grabbed her pillow and shout all of what she feels inside. “I hate you! I hate you! I hate you!!”

After what it seems like hours of shouting, she sighs in defeat. “That girl must be so lucky…” she mumbled. Her phone rang on her bed. She scowl when she saw the caller ID. “Go ahead and call idiot! I’m not answering…” she yelled at her phone and stomped her way downstairs.

She grabs some apple in the fridge and munch it down. Stephanie wasn’t expecting this to herself that she would be so upset. That’s the effect for having a fat crush on Mike. “Honey, Mike’s on the phone!” Her mom yelled at the kitchen. “I’m not here!!!” Stephanie yelled back out of frustration and went to sit on the couch with his dad.
