Five months pregnant Ville’s point of view
I lean against the doorframe and watch Skylar as she gets the nursery ready. She puts a picture of a watercolor elephant on the wall, steps back, shakes her head and takes it off. Her decision about where everything should go closely resembles that of a squirrel crossing the road.
"What are you smiling about?" she asks me. She sets the picture down and picks up stuffed giraffe. Soon after we arrived home, a box came in from April filled with baby stuff.
"Let’s go out tonight, just us. You’ve been working so hard on everything. You need a break," I say changing the subject. She looks at me then around the room and finally back at me.
"No, you have time to finish the nursery. I am taking you out and that’s final," I say sternly. She sighs and walks over to me. She wraps her arms around my neck and kisses me.
"Okay, we’ll go somewhere tonight," she says. She gets a confused look on her face before it splits into a grin. She takes my hand and places it on her stomach.
"They’re kicking," I say, awed. She nods then lays her head on my shoulder. I wrap my arm around her shoulder and kiss her head. It is times like these that help me get through the crazy hormonal changes.
"I’m going to go lie down for a bit," she says softly. I kiss her head again before she leaves the room.
Later that night
"I’m not going!" Skylar shouts.
"Why don’t you want to go?" I ask through the door.
"I look like a fat cow!" I sigh and run my hands over my face.
"Kaunis, we’ve been through this before, you don’t look like a fat cow. You look like someone who is pregnant with twins," I tell her gently, but firmly. The door opens and she stands there glaring at me, in her bra and underwear.
"I look like a fat cow that is pregnant with twins," she says, tears in her eyes. I pull her against me and wrap my arms around her tightly. Her body shakes as she starts crying.
"You don’t look like a fat cow, darling. You look like the most beautiful woman in the world who is carrying our children," I tell her. She pulls away and looks at me.
"I don’t look like a cow?" she asks. I shake my head no then kiss her. She kisses me back.
"I’ll go get ready now," she says, walking into our room and closing the door.
At the restaurant
Skylar stares up at the chandelier in amazement, then looks over at the band as they start playing, then around the room, and finally at me. Her whole face is lit up.
"How did you manage this? I mean, I thought The Crystal Rose was closed on Saturdays?" she asks.
"It normally is," I say, grinning.
"Okay, keep your secrets," she says looking away, but I can see her smile.
"Excuse me, Madam, but can I interest you with some sparkling grape juice?" our waiter asks.
"Jean Claude!" Skylar exclaims. He smiles and bows.
"Oh, um yeah, I’ll like some," she says.
"You look absolutely beautiful tonight, Skylar," Jean says, grinning. Skylar blushes and says thank you. Jean sits the bottle on the table and puts the lid on. He then takes a pen and paper out then asks us for our orders. We give it and hand him our menus.
"That’s how you did it, by calling in favors," Skylar says, after he leaves.
"I knew you were too smart to keep it a secret for long," I say, winking.
She’s absolutely right, though. I’ve known the Jean Claude for a while and when I told him my plans, he happily agreed to let me use the restaurant for the night. He would cook the meals and wait our table but if I wanted anything else, I had to find my own people.
We get our meals and eat. After we finish, as planned, various circus performers appear: unicyclists, acrobats, jugglers, etc. Jean Claude comes to clear the table. She says thank you then goes back to watching the performance. She hasn’t stopped smiling.
I close my eyes and take a deep breath. My hands shake as I pull a small, square box from my pocket and open it. A diamond rose ring shines up at me. I smile and close the box, then look over at Jean. I give a small nod. He nods back and disappears. Seconds later, rose petals begin to gently float down around us. Skylar laughs and holds her hands out, catching petals like a kid catching snowflakes. I take another deep breath and stand up. I walk over to Skylar and kneel in front of her. She looks down at me, confused. My pulse races and my hands shake, but my voice is steady when I say four simple words:
"Will you marry me?"
