Yamaguchi had never liked his freckles.

When he was younger, he used to be bullied for them. All the kids would say how stupid they were or how they made him uglier than he already was. Of course, that brought his confidence down considerably. Even though they were meaningless insults from stupid and insignificant kids, as Tsukishima would say, it still really hurt.

Yamaguchi would stress about his looks often. Practically every day, the moment he would get home, you would find him standing in front of a mirror and glaring at his face. He would sneer and insult himself, hoping, praying that someday he would wake up and the wretched dots on his cheeks would be gone. That they would be no more.

Due to his hatred for himself, that bitterness led him to hate all freckles. Whenever he tends to see someone with freckles, someone that was confident and happy to have the unique marks on their skin, he would get filled with such anger. He couldn't help it, really. It wasn't like he particularly liked being mean in such a way. He really could not help it.

For years, Yamaguchi would bring himself and others down for things they couldn't control. He would cover his face with foundation and concealer, he would beg his mother for laser surgery, and so on. Hell, he even considered suicide at one point just because of his damned genetics.

So, yes. Yamaguchi despised freckles more than anything in the universe. He found them to be disgusting and awful despite his mother's words. Sometimes he would even hate her for his curse. He knew that he was probably-and by probably, he meant most definitely-being dramatic. He knew that. He knew that and he didn't care.

Yamaguchi sighed as he tugged on his backpack, beginning to walk out of the gym sluggishly. He and Tsukishima hadn't been walking home together lately but he tried to not let it bother him.

He was lost in his own thoughts, fingers brushing against his cheeks as a deep frown weighed his face down. He felt like shit that day and it all felt so irritating. He hated the skin he had so much.

The sound of quick footsteps disturbed his self-pitying time. Yamaguchi turned his head only to see a floof of orange. He looked lower and saw the bright face of Hinata Shoyo. The small decoy was hopping excitedly on his tippy toes with his cute head tilted to the left. He seemed to be saying something but Yamaguchi was too wrapped up in staring at his freckles to pay attention.

"You, um...you have freckles," Yamaguchi stated.

"Hm? Oh, yeah! It's been getting sunnier and stuff so....freckles?" Hinata giggled nervously. "I know, they're weird on me. Yours is always so cute, though!"

"...Huh?"

"I said your freckles are cute! Like, they're so pretty! They make you unique, but in, like, the best way possible! You look super cute with them! Is that weird? Sorry, Yama-chan! Anyways, you did super duper good at practice today!" Hinata gushed, throwing compliments at him left and right.

Yamaguchi went pink and squeezed his backpack straps tighters, looking away from the ginger. His chest was squeezing so tightly in his chest and his throat was completely and utterly dry. Was he dying? He sent a glance at Hinata to see him waving his hands around animatedly, talking about how cool he had been during practice.

"-a-and you were all like, 'Gwashhh" and "fwoom"! You're the coolest! All your training has really paid off! I really admire you for that." he hummed, looking up at Yamaguchi through his bangs. He had a small, sheepish smile as he turned away but it was one of the most genuine things Yamaguchi had ever seen in his life.

"Th-thank, um, thanks, Hinata. I really appreciate it..." Yamaguchi mumbled.

"Of course! Call me Shoyo if you wanna! Anyways, do you want to hang out sometime? I like talking to you! You're super sweet and cute!" Hinata paused, face going bright pink once he realized what he had said. "W-wait, um, I didn't, like, uh...I didn't mean to say that? Not that you ar-arent, uh, cute! Because you are? I just, um, plan-planned to, you know-keep that to myself? I'm making this so weird, oh my god."

Hinata placed his hand over his face as he groaned. Although his face was hidden, Yamaguchi could still see the red painting his ears and neck. The taller bit his lip to muffle his chuckle, blushing a bunch himself. Who gave this tiny gremlin the right to be so cute? He couldn't understand why Tsukki didn't like him.

"I would, I would love to hang out sometime, Shoyo..."

The strawberry blond's head whipped up, staring up at Yamaguchi wide-eyed before he grinned excitedly. "Yay! We should go to the park or something! Oh, shoot, I need to go this way..."

"And I need to go this way." Yamaguchi motioned to a different direction.

"Well, it's fine! I'll see you tomorrow, Yama-chan!"

"Tadashi is fine."

"O-oh! Um, alright then, T-Tadashi!" Hinata squeaked. "I'll see you! Have a good night!"

The two began to walk away from one another with giddy, euphoric grins. Yamaguchi, for one of the first times in his life, had truly been so genuinely grateful for his freckles. He brushed his fingers over his cheeks once more before turning around and cupping his hands around his mouth.

"Your freckles are really cute too, Shoyo!"

Yamaguchi immediately turned around and sped walked away, ignoring the squawks and stutters from the ginger that he left behind. He supposed that, sometimes, freckles weren't all that, considering that they certainly were not doing Hinata an injustice after all.

Maybe having them wasn't too bad.
