Words of a Feather

This is a poem to sort of slam all the people that were hating on Miss America 2013, Nina Davuluri, for saying she didn't deserve to be Miss America for her race.

Months of endless preparation
Perfecting the smallest of things
Weeks of no sleep
Putting your heart into it all
Putting your soul into it all
All for a crown and title

They said
"You can do this"
"You deserve this"
"You earned it"
But they also said
"You need to be American to wear the crown"

Confused and lost
I don't know what to do
Give it all up for some untrue words
Have my reign that I've dreamed of
The first seems easiest
But the latter is what I choose
To prove to them I am worthy of this

"I have to rise above that"
"First and foremost I am an American"
"Miss America has embraced diversity"
"Celebrate diversity through culture competency"
"I deserve this title"
"I deserve this crown"
