Chapter Ten

I stare into Josh’s eyes, my tears vanishing from my eyes. “I wish I could believe that tomorrow was promised…,” I choke out.

Josh strokes my hair, and holds me tighter. “Then hope.” Josh kisses my head. “There’s always a chance. And you’ve lived so many tomorrows. We both have. Get some sleep, and rest. I want tomorrow to be a lazy day. We can just sit around and watch movies all day or something.” Josh kisses me a again, and looks at me in the eyes. “You better sleep.”

Josh begins to leave, but I grab his hand, wanting him to stay. “Tomorrow’s never promised. Stay? Please?” I beg.

Josh smiles a little. I get in the bed, and Josh takes off his shirt, then jumps in the bed. I let Josh hold me the whole night. I let him have his arms around me, and my hands on his chest. I listen to the rhythmic tune of his heartbeat until I fall asleep.

Don’t leave me. Don’t leave me. Don’t leave me. His words repeat again right before I fall asleep.

“Hey. Cory. Wake up,” I hear. Josh is gently shaking me awake. I moan, trying to get him to back off a little. It doesn’t work. He continues to shake me, and eventually sweeps me up and carries me downstairs. “Lazy days begin with pie,” Josh says as he puts me sitting up on the couch.

I moan again, and tip over on the couch to lie back down. “I’m not hungry,” I say sleepily.

“Me neither. But we’re eating anyway,” Josh laughs. He kisses my cheek, and runs to the kitchen excitedly. Someone’s a happy duck…

I sit up, and rub my eyes, getting the sleep out of them. I yawn, and Josh jogs back. He hands me a plate of apple pie and a fork. “Thanks…” I say even more sleepily than before.

“Tired, Cory?” Josh asks as he sits next to me on the couch.

                I nod. “Movie day?”

“If you want. Eat!” Josh takes my hand with the fork, picks up pie, and puts it in my mouth. “Good?”

“It’s alright.” I sniff, and put the plate down. I sneeze, and Josh laughs. “What?”

                “You sneeze like a kitten!”

                “I don’t sneeze like a kitten.”

                “Yeah, you kinda do.”

“No I don’t.” I sneeze again, listening this time. “Fine. Maybe just a little bit.”

                “No. A lot a bit.”

                I chuckle. “Whatever.”

“Eat more pie.” Josh hands me the pie, but I don’t take it. “Something wrong?”

I shrug my shoulders. If something was bothering me, depending on what it was, I would likely be crying. Or acting angry. Or something like that. “I don’t know,” I say. “Maybe I’m just really tired… or something…”

                “What might wake you up?”

I think. But my eyes close, and I lean on Josh’s shoulder. His arm wraps around me, and I start drifting off. Don’t leave me. Don’t leave me. Don’t leave me. Don’t leave me. Don’t leave me. Don’t leave me. Ugh!! Those words will never stop repeating in my head. I find myself wrapping my arms around Josh’s torso, and mumbling the words repeating in my head. “Don’t leave me.
