HER whole life addilyn never really knew where she came from. her parents gave her away as soon as she was born and she doesn't even know where they are now. but she doesn't really care either because she's happy with her current family.
and with family she means the pogues and her stepmom. jenna has always been there for addi, treating her like the child she was never able to have because she can't have kids of her own. she was diagnosed with that when she was in her early thirties. terry, her stepdad, and jenna were heartbroken but saw that as an opportunity to give someone a home whose parents didn't want them.
but their luck was short-lived. around six years later addilyn's stepdad was taken from them. she never really got over his unrighteous death and has changed ever since. she just couldn't figure out why someone got shot for walking through the neighborhood. they were told that he was talking back, even pulled a knife because he didn't want to get arrested for apparently parking his car in front of a hydrant, which in fact did happen, but she knew that that was the only true fact about the story that the cops told her. because her stepmom was there when it happened. terry just came back from shopping grocery's and jenna went outside to help him. terry did talk back to the cop but just because he was standing up for himself. his wife begged him to stop because she knew exactly where this was leading. and her fear became true. he got shot twice in the chest that night for doing nothing wrong.
with just six years addilyn didn't really understand what happened. yet losing a loved one who got killed by a cop, that she understood. and it affected her visibly. not only did she get trust issues but also shut everyone off. it was her worst year to say the least. her grades went bad and the worst of all was her mindset. jenna quickly noticed addis struggles. she barely wanted to eat anything, slept through most of the day and lost interest in everything that made her the happy little kid that she had been.
lucky for addilyn, jenna tried to help as best as she could. she took her to a doctor where she got diagnosed with depression and the doctor gave her antidepressant medication and jenna tried her best to make the girl as happy as often. and it worked. of course it never really 100% disappeared but she changed for the better.
it took a long while but addilyn found herself thinking "i've made it" one day. and that day was when she met the pogues.
she was twelve years old. it was a saturday and she and her stepmom went out for a walk. they had decided to sit down on a bench in a small park for a few minutes before they had planned walking home again. that was when a brown-haired girl called kiara made her way over to the blonde girl and asked her if she wanted to play basketball with her and her friends. addilyn nodded shyly and with a little encouragement of jenna she went along.
that day she made her new found family.
