Week 5: Breaking young horses.
-
I have a 6yr old 16.2 mare... Getting her broke was a pain because she grew to much, to fast. We couldn't continue training while she was growing. Not only because of her sucky coordination from being so long and leggy, but because of her mind.
A few trainers I know have started horses when they were still trying to figure out how to use their body... Guess how that ended. Let's just say the horse isn't exactly a youth horse. It can't stay sound. (Just this horse I'm talking about. Not saying all of them end up lame)
For example, I have 2 two year olds. If 2yr old #1 is at a good enough mental state and coordinated enough, I would start training. Now, if 2yr old #2 isn't at a good mental state to train but is decently coordinated... DONT train it! It's not worth taking a chance.
