Chapter 5 An evening with Caius,

When Cindy called me, I went into the kitchen in a daze, unaware of anything because I was focused on Caius's footsteps overhead.

Little Mike looked up from his plate of cookies and milk. ''Raina, mommy won't listen to me. Tell her that Mr. Volturi can't stay here. I don't like him, he's creepy.''

''Mikey, I'm surprised at you, we don't even know him. How can you judge him? ''I say scolding him.

Mike pull the face of disbelief.

''His fingers were like ice. ''

''Michael, it's understandable, it's must be 20 below tonight.'' Cindy said looking outside

Being told by his mother, Mikey hung his head in shame for his outburst.

In the silence the wind howled, and the trees bent it to its will as it taps the windowpane.

''You know Mr. Volturi really liked your snowman. ''I say to cheer him up.

''He was just saying that to get us to like him.'' He pouts, "I don't trust him Raina, you shouldn't like him either. ''

Cindy sighed. ''Raina, that's just the way Mike is. He either he loves you or he hates you. ''

Turning to Mike, Cindy said in finality. ''Now Mr. Volturi will be staying here. So, no more nonsense. One night won't be bad.''

But Cindy was wrong. When dad came down, he told us Caius would be staying for about a month. Well I was excited about the unexpected knowledge. Mike however just cried.

Cindy looked surprised. ''A month? But Bob this town is closed for the season. What's he going to do sleep all day? ''

''Not to worry. ''Dad reassured, ''he is a writer like me. He just wants somewhere peaceful to focus. ''

''Winter is my only time to relax. Really, Bob must he stay here so long?''

''Oh, my poor wife. Now you have two writers under the same roof, ''dad says, ''but you know our type we keep to ourselves. He would be no problem at all I'm sure. Besides, we need the money. ''

Cindy sighed giving in. ''A week or so isn't so bad but no more...''

Suddenly interrupted by the unexpected noise Cindy stopped and observed little Mike stomping on the floor.

''Enough, time for bed. ''She said firmly.

When dad and I were alone. I thought it was the best time to get information out of him about what he knew about Caius Volturi.

''You said he was a writer, what kind? ''I asked.

''Well I believe he said something about research. A volume he has been working on for years. ''

I listen intrigued. What would be so interesting that he could be researching. I hope it was as fascinating as the man himself. I could picture him using a feather and a quill like in the old days on the old parchment. I could imagine his elegant style of writing scrolled gracefully on the page.

When Cindy came downstairs, she just suggested inviting Mr. Volturi down for a glass of wine by the fire. ''If he's going to be here for some time we might as well get to know one another. ''

While my parents were in the kitchen getting the refreshments prepared. Cindy asked me to fetch Mr. Volturi. I was delighted to.

''He has chosen a room at the very end of the hall. I'd go myself but I'm just too tired tonight. ''
