A few weeks had passed. Meg, Jo, Beth, Amy, and I were practicing a play in our attic.
"Dear Countess, pray for me, for I have sinned against myself and my brother Roderigo," I said in a dramatic voice.
"Abby, you've got to say 'sinned' as if you've really sinned," Jo said."Sinned! Sinned," I said with emphasis.
"Roderigo: You arrive, seeking the Duke of Lancashire. Hark, ye! Who goes there? I forgot the cymbals. It's Roderigo," Jo said.
"I want to be Lady Violet. I'm exhaustified of being the boy," Amy said.
"The play's the thing, Amy. You're too little to be Lady Violet," Jo said."Be the Countess de Montanescu," Beth said.
"You've no lines," Amy said."Besides, who'd be Roderigo," Meg asked.
"Gentlemen...I propose a new member for our theatrical soclety: Theodore Laurence," Jo said.
"No! Jo, are you mad," I asked."He'll laugh at us," Meg said.
"He'll think it's only a game," Amy said.
"He won't. I promise," Jo said.
"We'd have to guard our conduct," Meg said.
"We bare our souls and tell secrets," I said.
"He would find us improper," Beth said.
"Teddy would certainly not! Please! Let's try him, shall we," Jo asked as Laurie tumbled out of a pile of clothes.
"Traitor," Amy exclaimed.
"Artists! May I present myself...as an actor, musician, and a loyal and humble servant of the club. In token of my gratitude and to promote communication, shouting from the windows being forbidden. I shall provide a post office in our hedge. To further encourage the baring of our souls and the telling of our secrets, I do pledge never to reveal what I hear in confidence here," Laurie said.
"Well then...do take your place, Roderigo," I said as I placed a hat on Laurie's head as he began to smile.
That smile made my heart skip a beat.
"Sir Roderigo," Jo said as she took a wooden sword and pretended to knight Laurie.
And with that, Laurie was seen as an equal in our theatrical society. The five of us started chatting like we had known each other forever. After talking for a while, Laurie pulled me aside. It made my heart race. Was Meg right? Do I fancy Laurie? I haven't known him for that long. I simply cannot be in love with him. I see Teddy as a brother. I couldn't possibly have feelings for him. Besides, I think he has his eyes on Jo.
"I've noticed that you're quite the singer, Abby," Laurie said.
"Teddy! How did you find out about that," I asked.
"You had your window open a few days ago, and I couldn't help but overhear the most divine voice, which distracted from my studies. Ta voix est très angélique," he answered.
"Oh. Merci," I said as a blush crept onto my face.
"I think it would be just splendid if you came over tomorrow and sang for me," Laurie said.
"No, Teddy. I possibly couldn't. I'd simply distract you from your studies," I said.
"I insist you do," he said.
"Alright, I will," I said.
"Good," Laurie said with a smile.Theodore Laurence, you have no idea what you are doing to me. I couldn't help but give in to him. I don't think I can say no to him. The next day, I went over to the Laurence's when Laurie told me to. I was in his room, and we were talking about the most obscure things.
"Jo is at Aunt March's today. She wanted to come over too, but she had to be there because I couldn't," I said.
"That's alright. Can you please sing that lovely song you sang a few days ago for me now," Laurie said.
"Of course, Teddy," I said before singing the song he heard me singing a few days ago.
"That was very beautiful, Abby. Someday, I might compose a piece that you could sing with," he said.
"I'd love that. I think we could work well together," I said with a smile.A/N: Sorry this chapter was kinda short. Also, ta voix est très angélique is French for your voice is very angelic.
