"I have a brother", I said to myself. How was this possible? I thought I was mom's only and first child.
I couldn't stop my tears from falling.
What am I supposed to do know? Should I confront her? Should I keep it a secret? Why did she hide it?
I looked at my phone to know the time. I was in the basement for an hour now. I had to go upstairs. On the way to my room I decided to keep it a secret. Slowly I went upstairs. When I passed the kitchen my mom noticed me again. "Hey honey. Did you find your notes?", she asked. Then she looked at me and saw my teary eyes. "What happened? Did you bump you head again?" I couldn't keep it a secret. I couldn't hold my anger back. "Why...?", I stuttered "Why..." My mom looked at me with a questioning look and asked: "What happened? You know you can tell me everything."
"Oh? I can?", I asked sarcastically "Then tell me. Tell me why you hid this secret 20 years."
"What are you talking about? What did you do in the basement? You can't be so shocked because of some notes..."
"YOU KNEW! I TOLD YOU SO MANY TIMES THAT I'M FEELING EMPTY!", I screamed "I WAS MISSING SOMETHING AND YOU DIDN'T THINK IT WAS NECESSARY TO TELL ME THAT I'M NOT YOUR ONLY CHILD?"
I slammed the papers and the photo on the kitchen table.
I didn't even know what to think. Maybe it was wrong to scream at her, but what should I do?
She looked at the papers and sighed. Silence filled the room. Didn't she know what to say? Didn't she want to tell me the truth? Was all this just a big misunderstanding? Crying, I slumped down on the floor.
She sighed again. Then she looked at me. "It's true", she lightly said "you're not an only child. Your brother, Nate, went with your father before you were born. He's eighteen years older than you."
"Why did you hide it from me? Why did they run away when I was born? What happened?", I asked, still crying. She just shook her head. "I don't... I mean... it's so difficult to explain. I just can't tell you. If you want to know, you'll have to find out yourself. I'm so sorry."
I didn't know what to say. First, she hid all this from me and now she didn't want to tell me the truth.
I just went to my room. It was late already. I did my night routine and went to bed, but I couldn't sleep. The whole night I thought about what happened and cried.

The next day in school I wasn't able to concentrate. In my first period I had science again. My teacher didn't ask me any questions – maybe because of the incident yesterday? –, so, I just stared out of the window and thought about so many things. My mom. My life. I had so many questions. The period felt so long. I felt like I was going crazy.

I knew that I had to focus on my next classes. I wasn't able to do this, that's why I decided to skip them and went to the library.
The library was very empty. Just a few students who had a free period were there. They learned. I didn't know what to do. Walking through the library, and passing sections that were relevant for learning, I made my way to fantasy books and old legends. I was looking for something interesting to clear my mind when I felt a tap on my shoulder. Startled, I turned around to meet Sophie. She had a questioning look on her face but smiled like always. "You scared me!", I exclaimed. She narrowed her eyes. "Do I have to feel betrayed? I mean... you just passed all the boring books and came here. You know that this is my territory, don't you?", she asked. "Don't worry! I didn't want to betray you and start reading twilight behind your back. You are the first person to know if this ever happens, okay?" she just laughed at my answer, but all of sudden she got serious again. "Do you want to tell me what happened?" I just stood there. "I...", I didn't know what to tell her "I just need to clear my mind..." She again smiled at me and grabbed a few books. Then she motioned me to follow her.
We went to a lonely corner of the library and sat there.
"Can you help me to do some research about Hybrids?", she suddenly asked. "Oh... sure...", I answered "but can I ask you something?"
"Sure" her smile never fainted.
"Why do you love these stories so much? It's a not bad thing... I just want to know..."
"Oh sure", she began and smiled happily "Well... I think, I should start from the very beginning, shouldn't I?"
"Oh... tell me what you are comfortable with to tell me..."
"Don't worry. I'm ok with it", she chuckled.
I nodded.
"So..." she continued "I'm not living with my parents. I'm living with my grandma. My parents died when I was young. I don't know them and have no memories about them. Grandma told me that demons caused my parents death. I believed this all when I was small, but later I started to doubt it. She insisted on these stories. Of course, I wanted to know if she is telling the truth, so I started to do some research. Well... I guess I lost sight of my goal and ended up loving these stories. My grandma doesn't know. She would think I'm obsessed. But yeah... that's my story..."
"Do you still think it was a demon... you know..."
"I don't know..."
She shook her head.

After a few minutes of talking about her grandma and things like that, we started our research. I didn't really know what I was searching for.
"Um hey..." I said to her and tapped her shoulder "this could be interesting."
She looked at me and at the page I was reading two minutes ago. She looked very closely at the page and started to smile even more.
"Oh my god. Look at this!", she screamed, forgetting that we are in a library. All the attention was on us now. I just awkwardly smiled and motioned her to be quiet.
"Look at this! Hybrids are very attractive and only a mate can resist their charm."
"A what?"
"A mate. It means that a person belongs to another person. This person is only interested in her mate. Others are uninteresting. Two creatures that belong to each other are mates."
"Oh, I understand, but... since you had to scream this guy is staring at us", I told her and motioned with my eyes to a tall guy that was standing I front of a bookshelf.
"Oh my god!", Sophie whisper screamed "He is so handsome. He could be a hybrid!"
In this moment the guy averted his gaze and grinned.
Did he hear us? No... that's impossible. He's standing too far away. But his reaction... I'm going crazy.
I looked at my phone and saw that my mom called me. It was already late. "Shit! I need to go home. I'm late. Bye Sophie."
"Bye bye", she waved at me. When I passed the guy, I had a strange feeling. Shivers ran down my spine.
This guy is so strange. I hope I'll never see him again.

When I arrived home, my mom rushed out of the kitchen. "Oh my god. I thought something happened. Are you okay?", she asked.
"Yeah... I'm fine... I guess...", I answered.
"Look, I'm sorry. I'm doing this for your own good"
"Mom... it's okay... I'm not angry anymore. I'm just a bit disappointed..."
Then she came and hugged me. I hugged her back.
"How was your day? You were there very long. What did you do?", she asked. "Oh... I went to the library and met Sophie there. She wanted me to help her with some research..."
"Who is Sophie? Did you finally have made a friend?"
"No mom. Sophie and I are only something like colleagues. We meet each other only in the library. That's all."
Mom nodded and went back to the kitchen. I went upstairs to my room. I grabbed a book and started learning. At least I tried, but it had no use. I still had yesterday's incident in my mind, and I wanted to know more about it.
Should I go back to the basement and try to find something? No... this isn't right.
I closed my book and thought about what to do. Then I remembered that I took the papers from yesterday to my room.
They were in my drawer. I grabbed them and looked at them.
The photo showed nothing I could use to find the truth. The birth certificate was useless to.
What should I do?
I had no clue. Suddenly my phone vibrated. It was a massage from Sophie. We exchanged numbers once. It was the first time we met in the library. We thought that we maybe could help each other to study.

Sophie: "I found more information's about the Hybrids. Do you want to know them?"
I: "Oh... why not? I'm bored."
Sophie: "Okay. A legend says, that there are hybrids living in the so called "Dark Forest". It says that, it's only a small group."
I: "Wait! Did you say Dark Forest?"
Sophie: "Yeah... do you know something?"
I: "Well... this forest is in a nearby city. I heart that a few people got killed there and a few years ago there was a train crash. Many people died. A few bodies weren't found. Some people say, that the forest is haunted since the crash. That's all I heard..."
Sophie: "Oh wow. Sound scary. Anyways, I have to go now, my grandma is calling. You can ask me for information about creatures anytime."
I: "Wait. Didn't you say hybrids have abilities?"
Sophie: "I did. What's about it?"
I: "Well can you tell me examples?"
Sophie: "Sure. Wait five minutes, then I'll text you a little list. I have to help grandma first."
I: "Okay."

I laid my phone to the side and waited. While I was waiting, I did some research about the Dark Forest.
I found nothing I could use, but I had the feeling that this forest had answers for me. I didn't know why.
Suddenly my phone vibrated again.

Sophie: "Here is the information you wanted! Their abilities are really different from hybrid to hybrid. Some have visions and some can read minds. I couldn't find more about it. I guess these are just assumptions. I'm sorry. But I found something more interesting. One legend says, that once a few humans tried to ask them for help, because they wanted to find someone. I mean... yeah... why not? The are half werewolf. They can find people. Maybe they could help me to find the real murder of my parents. But the legend also says, that those people were found killed. Nobody knows what it was, but some people say, that it was the hybrids fault.
I mean... they sure would do everything to keep their secret save, but the legend is very old. Maybe it's not true."
I: "Ok wow... thank you!"

This information was very helpful. I didn't believe in these legends, but maybe there was a little bit of truth.
What's when there is someone who can help me finding my brother?
It was just a forest so, why not?
But when can I do this?
Then it hit me like a train. The holidays would start tomorrow . I decided to use these holidays to search my brother.
I knew mom wouldn't want it, but I had to. I didn't want to feel empty any longer.

"I'll do this. I just have to tell mom!"
