I walked back to the clearing to move on, but something made me pause. A moment later a grey brown wolf stepped into the small clearing. I tensed up. It was followed by three others, two males and a female.

I rose to leave then he growled. I snapped around and looked at him in the eyes. Feral, my wolf growled. Wildness filled his crazed gold eyes. That was my only warning. My front half dropped as he leaped. Three of his claws caught my lower back. He rolled and landed on his feet before snarling at me. I turned to face him. He launched himself at me again. I dodged and grabbed his front leg in my jaws. He slammed into the ground. His other paw hit me in the face, leaving for long gashes on the side of my skull.

I rolled with his paw in my mouth grinding my teeth. He howled in pain, before kicking me in the stomach with his hind legs. I leapt back and dropped to the ground on my stomach as I heard paws thumping on the ground behind me. The other wolf soared over me. I flicked a paw up catching him in the stomach with my 6 inch, sharp claws. He was dead before he hit the ground. The first wolf went after my throat.

I dodged to the left and buried my teeth in his shoulder ripping a chunk as I pulled back. The hit cost me though. The claws on his damaged leg got me on my right side up to the middle of my chest. He somehow managed to slip that paw between my front legs. I threw my weight into him. His teeth nicked the back of my neck. He realized too late the opening to his neck that move left. I bit and twisted.

Thick, hot blood poured into my mouth, along with a chunk of his neck. I pulled back and watched the wild, golden glow leave his eyes. I turned to the remaining male and female. They watched as I sat and cocked my head to the side. The male was grey and white with blue eyes. The female was beige with orange and gold eyes.

Neither looked like they were going to attack so I rose, bowed, and departed. Before leaving, I made the mistake of looking at the bodies. The first wolf looked about 30 years old with greying brown hair. He was about six foot six. The second wolf was a kid about my age. He had chocolate brown hair, just like his fur. There was a bloody cavity where his stomach used to be. Tears stung my eyes. I went behind a tree, grabbing my duffle, shifting, and changing into shorts and a T-shirt. I went back to the other two rogues. They remained in wolf form.

"I'm sorry for your loss, but I won't regret defending myself," I told them. "I'll be off now."

I turned and left the area. I didn't make it very far before blood loss and exhaustion made me stop. My shirt was soaked with blood. I was bleeding out too fast to heal. My fingernails were covered in blood. I could taste it in the back of my throat. Blood smeared my hands and probably my face. Darkness threatened my vision.

"Told you I smelled blood," a feminine alto voice said.

"She doesn't look too good," another female replied.

"Let's take her to Ivy," the first one suggested.

"You sure, Jade?"

"Trust me, Rox. This one is a good one."

Those were the last words I heard before unconsciousness swallowed me whole.
