"Where did I put my damn heels," Mary hollered down the hall.

"They're on the chair in the walk-in," Scarlet replied.

Mary muttered something under her breath as she ran behind me and into the closet. Jeze let out a sigh.

"You have too much hair," she told me as she pushed a curl into place. "But it does look lovely."

"I'm just wondering if Mary will finally get caught."

"Yeah, right. That girl has the worst luck of us all."

We glanced to the girl in question who was strapping something to her calf.

"I don't think I want to know," Jeze muttered. "Scarlyt, you ready?"

The mixed blood have a smirk and nodded. "Let's knock these fools on their asses."

The four of us trooped down the hall as if we were a funeral precession. As we moved, guards appeared from the shadows and escorted us. I noticed Anne, Lilly, and Elise joining the group as well. Lily whispered something in Scarlyt's ear. She frowned and murmured something back. Lilly nodded and the three maids vanished like ghosts.

"What was that all about," I asked.

"Hopefully, nothing," Scarlyt replied. I wanted to ask more, but we reached the top of the stairs.

"Smile, everybody," Scarlyt told us as her lips turned into a beaming smile. "Not all guests here are friends, and we must not let them see us sweat."

"Killing with poison and poise, is it?" Mary sounded anxious despite her cool looks.

"So it would seem," Jeze giggled, letting a soft smile slip across her lips.

I sigh. "Who gives a crap what they see?"

"Do not flaunt your feelings, little star, lest they give away the next step to your dance partner."

"Fair enough." I started to laugh as if Scarlyt told me a joke, hoping it didn't look as forced as it sounded.

We began our decent masks and smiles, firmly in place. Scarlyt walked first, followed by Mary, Jeze, and then myself.

"Presenting Lady of the House, Scarlyt Wylde! And accompanying her, her cousin from the Irish Court, Miss Grenadine Wylde, Princess Jezeabelle Roxa of the White Court, and Lady Sandra Galactica Ambrosia Finesse Mauve  Uniquess Alice Legen-Dari of the Lobo Court."

I tried not to burst out laughing at the name I might've slightly altered in the announcer's notes for my name as well as Mary's. I even made up Uniquess just for this moment, and I stuck a legendary joke in there. I smothered my chuckle with a fake cough when the three girls turned their heads to me. Well, they looked like they were smiling benevolently at the crowd but were actually giving me the evil eye. We met at the bottom of the stairs and proceeded to mingle with the crowd. I didn't know very many people personally, but I knew they're records.

"Marquis! It is so good to see you! How are your girls?" Scarlyt was talking to a noble house head. I walked over to the refreshments table rather than mingle when and older portly gentleman stopped me.

"You must be Lady Sandra," he smiled showing crooked, yellow teeth. "You are even more lovely up close."

"Thank you, senor. Might I be so bold as to inquire your name?"

He grinned even more. "A flower as lovely as you might do anything you desire. I am Duke Ferdinand Cortez."

"It is a pleasure to make your acquaintance, Your Grace. If you would pardon me for a moment, I'm quite parched." I tried to pull my arm from his grip.
