Chapter Two: The Daughter-in-Law Contract

"Mom! Mom, are you alright?" A distant voice was calling her, but Um couldn't reply or even recognize the owner of the voice. Letting out a soft moan, she tried to open her eyes, but her attempts seemed to fail as her head pounded as if a sledgehammer had hit it.

"Mom, please, answer me!" her beloved Singto's sweet voice finally managed to get through her hazed mind.

"Singto, my baby," Um whispered as she opened her eyes and her son's face came into focus. Slowly, she rose into a sitting position as Singto and Mook sat on either of her sides, looking anxious. "I had a weird dream," she said, looking at her son. "I dreamt that you've returned from abroad with—" Whatever she was planning to say got stuck in her throat when her peripheral vision caught the sight of someone sitting nearby. Looking in that direction, Um paled upon seeing Krist sitting on the couch, looking at her curiously. She turned her gaze towards Singto before looking at her daughter.

"Mook, who is that?" she asked.

Mook cleared her throat as she smiled at Krist. "This is my baby brother's husband, Krist," she replied. "You see, Mother, unlike oriental societies, it is okay for a man to marry another man in western societies. As long as two people love each other, the matter of gender is irrelevant. So, it seems that our little Lion was influenced by some of the western habits and fell in love with a man and married him. Now, Krist is your new daughter—I mean, son-in-law!"

Um kept nodding her head calmly as her daughter explained to her who Krist was until Mook reached the part 'son-in-law'. Um blinked several times before she looked at her son, who smiled awkwardly at her.

"AHHH!"

Singto, Mook and Krist covered their ears as Um's ear-shattering scream filled the entire house before the older woman launched herself on Singto, striking him with her strong fists.

Krist watched as his husband and sister-in-law fussed over their unconscious mother, confusedly. He really couldn't understand her reaction at all!

Singto had told him that she knew about their marriage, so why was she shocked upon seeing him?

Krist let out a relieved sigh when his mother-in-law regained her consciousness. She seemed fine as she talked to her son until she spotted him. Krist and Um stared at each other before she looked at her son then at her daughter, asking her about him.

Krist hadn't expected the glass-shattering scream that suddenly filled the place. He still hadn't recovered from its effects when his mother-in-law sprung on his husband with her fists.

"Mom! Stop!"

"You will kill him!"

Krist and Mook exclaimed as they tried to pry Singto from Um's clutches but without avail. The older woman was stronger than she looked.

"Mom, please! You're hurting my husband!"

Um suddenly stopped pounding her son and turned her attention to Krist, who gulped as Um zeroed her piercing eyes on him, shooting the scariest glare in his direction.
