Sounds of heavy guitar riffs and soothing vocals came spilling out of the garage when I opened the door to Julie's garage. Looking up I saw the band practicing a new song that they were going to perform at their gig this weekend. Julie smiled at me to acknowledge my presence and I immediately sent one back accompanied by a little wave as I took my spot on the couch. I watched as Julie turned back to the band to give a note on the chorus.
I pulled out my notebook and continued on the drawing I had started last night. I was recruited as the merchandise and poster designer for Julie & The Phantoms after I moved to Hollywood for my dad's job and I met Julie. She was assigned to help guide me through the school when I started and a friendship blossomed from there. She saw my sketchbook and immediately asked me if I could make a poster for her band. Obviously, I said yes and she introduced me to the rest of the band and since then the four of us have been inseparable.
"Oh, sick! Is that our new poster?" A loud voice pulled me out of the trance that I tended to fall into whenever I am drawing. I lifted my head to see two shiny eyes and a bright smile looking back at me.
Luke Patterson. The boy who has been stuck in my head since the day I met him. The boy who inspires me every day with his passion and drive. The boy who would never love me the way I love him.
"Gosh Luke, you scared the shit out of me! And yes it is the new poster. The first draft anyway." I shook my head at him but kept a small smile on my face as I tore myself away from his gaze to look back down at my paper. That didn't last too long because a certain brunette guitarist interrupted me yet again. He moved his guitar to his other side and sat down next to me on the couch. Before I could say anything else my book was snatched from my hands. I tried to fight back and take it back but Luke is much stronger than I am and he was able to hold me back.
"First draft? Y/N, this is so good already! What could you have to fix?" A second voice said almost out of nowhere. Alex came over to the couch and started to admire my drawing with the band's name and logo.
Alex was the first member of the band Julie introduced me to. He was the only one who showed up to band practice on time that day so I was able to bond with him one on one before meeting the others. The only reason I would say that I am closer to Julie than Alex is because she's the only one who knows my feelings to a particular guitarist.
"Guys come one give it back. It's not that good anyway. I have to fix some of the lines and my shading looks like shit." I whined as I continued to fight against Luke to get my book back. I am a perfectionist when it comes to my drawings and didn't want the guys to see my bad attempts at drawing when I knew I could do better. Alex just laughed while shaking his head as he got off the couch and headed back to his drums.
"Y/N. Just chill for a sec. Come on." Luke said in a softer voice than usual as he put the book down on the table in front of us and turned towards me. He shifted his body so he could completely face me and he used his hands to grab both of my wrists in his. I finally stopped pushing against him and was able to really look him in the eyes. His face softened as we locked eyes.
He gave me a soft smile as he let go of one of my wrists to bring his hand up to my cheek and push a strand of hair away.
"Don't put yourself down Y/N. Your drawing is great. Anything you make will make this band of a bunch of goofs like a million times cooler." He sounded so genuine when he said that and it caused my heart to swell up and butterflies to appear in my stomach. Before I could respond Luke got called back over by Julie to start playing again.
He looked over at her, then back at me, and gave me one last smile before letting me go completely and heading back to his mic stand. Julie sent a small smile and eyebrow raise when I looked over at her. I just responded with a shrug even though I could feel my face heat up. I was able to keep eye contact with Luke and Julie to a minimum for the rest of their practice.
Before I knew it they were packing up their instruments and getting their stuff together. Reggie and Alex left together after checking out the progress I made on the new poster and saying bye. I promised Julie we would work on our homework together after her practice so I was grabbing my stuff about to head inside with her before I felt something pull me back. Or should I say someone. I turned around and saw Luke holding on to my arm and doing his little head tilt thing to the couch to signal he wanted me to stay back.
"Hey, Jules I'll be right up. I just need a minute." I said as Julie began to walk through her driveway and into the house. She turned around and saw me and Luke still standing in the garage together. She formed a small smirk on her face as she let out a small laugh.
"Don't worry, take all the time you need. All this math homework isn't going anywhere." She went to turn around and head into the house but she sent me a wink and threw me two finger guns. I shook my head at her obvious sarcasm and headed back in the garage where Luke was already sitting back down on the couch.
"So, what did you need?" I said softly as I stayed standing by the door with my hands stuffed in my back pockets. Luke just looked back up at me and I couldn't read the expression on his face. He was looking at me with those big puppy dog eyes that I fell for all those months ago. He slowly stood up and walked over to me.
Every step closer he took towards me made my heart beat a little faster. He eventually stood only two steps away from me. I took all of him in. His burnt orange beanie and the little hairs that stuck out from it that were stuck to his forehead from the small amount of sweat he gained from how hard he went during practice. His cut off shirt from a random rock band I have never heard of and shiny chain hanging from his pants and his slightly worn-out sneakers that he wore every day.
"I hate that you can't see how amazing you actually are Y/N." He whispered in the quietest voice I have ever heard from him. This calm and composed demeanor he has right now was the polar opposite from his normal crazy and rambunctious personality he donned during the day and on stage.
"The past couple of months I have been meaning to tell you something but I was a little too scared until today. Reggie and Alex found this song I wrote and started to, you know, ask who it's about." He was stuttering a little and began mumbling some of his words. Since when has Luke ever been this nervous?
Was I making him nervous?
"And I can't really lie to them cause they always see right through me so I told them, the uh, the truth. That I wrote a song about you and they, they began to tell me that they think you like me that way. But I don't really think that's true but they told me to tell you anyway. So..so here I am, pouring my heart out to you. And I am rambling. I can't stop talking so it would be really cool if you could interrupt me at some point so I stopped talking cause I am running out of-" I cut him off by throwing my arms around his neck and pulling him towards me to place my lips on his. It took a second for the shock to wear off but he started to kiss me back. Luke placed his hands on my hips and pulled me even closer.
Despite the euphoric feeling of Luke's lips on mine, I pulled away after a few more seconds and let myself catch my breath. Both of us were breathing heavily but we both had the goofiest smiles on our faces.
"Don't worry Luke, the guys were right. I like you. A lot." I smiled back at him as he closed his eyes and threw his head back, keeping that giant smile plastered on his face for what seemed like ever. He opened his eyes back up and looked back down at me. Then he pulled me back to him and wrapped his large arms around me and buried his head in my hair.
"So, when do I get to hear this song that I inspired?"
