-22- Married for one year

It was our first wedding day and I can file it away with the words, it backfired. What had been so beautifully thought out turned into one big disaster. Two weeks of preparation and planning and for what? Yes, for nothing!

On the morning of our first wedding day I was already very excited. Because I had planned a surprise for Zhan. I planned to drive with him to the airport after work and fly away with him for the weekend. More precisely, to fulfill a big wish for him. A weekend at Disneyland Paris.

I had the plane tickets, the hotel was booked and simply everything was perfectly prepared and planned. I had even put a bag with clothes for us in my trunk the evening before.

But then in the morning we didn't drive to work as planned and as usual with my car, but separately. Because Zhan had to accompany our boss to a meeting at another company as an assistant. In return he even had to pick him up and leave home earlier. But OK, even if we had to drive home after work, we still would have made it.

But this way I got up in the morning and Zhan was already gone. He had made breakfast for me and wrote on a note: "Good morning BoBo, all the best for our first wedding day. I am looking forward to this evening. Love you, your ZhanZhan"

I had told him the night before that I wanted to cook with him and decorate the Christmas tree with him. He wanted to do it days ago, but I had to come up with something that I could use as an excuse. So I told him we would do it on our wedding day. After all, we got married a year ago at Christmas.

I could hardly concentrate at work, so nervous and full of anticipation I was. The other colleagues didn't really work either. It's Christmas and like every year it means that our company will take a break for two weeks. Paid vacation for everyone! Nobody really thinks about work any more, just about finally getting off work and then being able to relax for two weeks.

The hours went by and there was still nothing to see of Zhan and my boss. I wrote him a message, but he hadn't answered me.

The more time passed, the stronger this strange feeling in my stomach became. At lunchtime I tried to call Zhan, but his cell phone was off. And we don't have the boss's cell phone number. He does have a company cell phone, but it's usually just lying around in his office, just like today. We could hear it ringing every now and then. But since his office door is locked, none of us could answer the calls.

When it was slowly approaching the end of the working day, I panicked. Where was Zhan? Why didn't he get in touch? I even asked my colleagues if they knew where the boss had an appointment today and if they had any idea how long it would take. But nobody knew more than me. And I, the idiot, had forgotten to ask Zhan about it.

The end of work came and someone from the board came to our office, wished us all a good time with the family and then sent us home.

I thought maybe Zhan was already home. So I left immediately. But when I got there, Zhan was not there. His cell phone had still been off, too. I know that Zhan also stores his appointments on his tablet, so I checked there. According to that and that shocked me, did my husband and boss go to Shanghai for an appointment? What?

Luckily, my ZhanZhan is a bit of an order freak and stores all the important things in his tablet. So also the private cell phone number of my boss. I called there immediately and my boss accepted the call as well. He said that at the moment they were stuck in traffic, but would be back soon. And he told me that Zhan's cell phone fell down by accident and he can't get it on anymore. So that's why I couldn't reach him.

Another hour went by and if Zhan didn't come back soon, we would miss the flight. So I called my boss again, but this time his phone was off.

Since I knew the last location, I also knew which route Zhan would take and I thought I would just drive towards him. My boss could then have continued with Zhan's car and we would have gone to the airport.

And then exactly the same thing happened to me as happened to Zhan and my boss. I got stuck in traffic. It didn't go back and forth. I looked desperately at my watch and knew that the plane was gone now.

Even if I changed the plans now to what I was only using as an excuse, cooking together and decorating the Christmas tree, it would be too late. Because the stalls where Christmas trees are sold are already closed. And only a few supermarkets are still open.

Over two and a half hours I was stuck in traffic jams and when it finally went on, it was of course too late for everything. So I took the next opportunity to turn around and was promptly stuck in traffic again. My cell phone battery was empty and I didn't even have my charger cable with me. Zhan had borrowed it two days ago and it was still at home.

When I finally managed to get home disappointed, Zhan was not there yet. It was just after midnight, our wedding day was over and there was no trace of Zhan. I connected my cell phone to the charging station and called my boss, luckily his phone was back on. He told me that Zhan's car was breaking down and didn't want to start again.

They had to wait for the towing service and were only driven to a workshop. I asked him which workshop it was and told him to tell Zhan to wait for me there. I got dressed again and set off immediately. Luckily the roads were clear now and I quickly arrived at the workshop. Meanwhile our boss had taken a cab and went home.

Zhan stood in front of the locked door of the workshop, shivering with cold and when he saw me, he started to cry. I took him in my arms and told him, "Now I'm here." Zhan blamed himself for ruining our first wedding anniversary.

"ZhanZhan, this is not your fault. Don't blame yourself for this, okay? We'll just get the first plane tomorrow morning."

"Plane?" Zhan asked me, crying.

I told him about my surprise and probably shouldn't have done that, because he cried even more bitterly. I put him in the car, turned on the heater and the seat heater and held Zhan in my arms until he calmed down. After that I called the airport service and they were kind enough to rebook our flight after I explained the circumstances.

And then I called the hotel in Paris and rebooked everything there as well. So that we can fly to Paris on the first flight and still have two days there at Disneyland.

On the way home Zhan fell asleep. I carried him upstairs to our apartment, put him in our bed and looked in my closet for the cell phone I received a few weeks ago for my contract renewal. I set everything up and stored all the numbers in it. On the memory card of Zhan's cell phone, there were fortunately all his important pictures, like our wedding picture, which he always has as a cell phone background.

So I also changed the wallpaper on Zhan's phone and put it on the bedside table next to his bed. He woke up in that moment and saw the cell phone. When I gave it to him and he saw the wallpaper, he finally smiled again. He took me in his arms and kissed me. And finally, at least we had a nice night together.

Totally tired we went to the airport. Zhan's mood was at its peak and I was very happy to see him smiling like that again. He was as excited as a little child and could hardly wait for it to finally start and for us to get to Disneyland.

On the plane, Zhan gave me a flat box and said, "Happy anniversary". I opened the box and inside was a coupon for a motorcycle ride on a race track and a bracelet. There is a pendant on the bracelet and the words "Best husband in the world" are engraved on it. That is so sweet of him.

As we sat there in the plane, a young woman kept looking over at us and smiling at me. Zhan saw that too. And when she made it feel like 20 times, he said to her, "Listen, this is my husband you keep smiling at. I don't like the way you keep smiling at him and you don't stand a chance with him anyway, because he loves only me! So back off." She immediately looked scared in another direction.

An elderly woman behind him and said, "That's right, boy, defend what's yours!" Zhan nodded decisively and I just had to smile. Although Zhan knows that he is the only one for me, he still gets jealous very quickly. It just shows me how much he loves me.

I simply cannot describe how much I love him. He is my everything and I am so happy that he is mine.
