Santine sat at her desk, rubbing her temples. The interrogations of the rogue prisoners had led to nothing she did not already know.
Something was coming.
Like that was news to her.
Something was always coming. Her entire life something had threatened to come, at her father, her mother, herself, and her pack.
It was not news.
What that something was, that was her issue. If at least she knew why so many felt the need to attack her pack and roam her lands, that would be something.
They were the Mountain Keeper Pack. She had never questioned the name. They kept the mountain safe. It made sense to her. The mountain and surrounding lands were beautiful, and it was home. She would defend it with her life.
It just irked her. The constant attacks had no rhyme or reason to them. To her, it seemed like they were surveying the mountain and not the pack.
The why was taunting her.
And now, with finding her mate, her nerves were just on edge. Her head was banging. She had not seen or heard from Jax since Saturday, and it was already Tuesday.
It had been three days since the night of Roma's birthday, and she was a wreck. She missed him. Cheyenne whimpered all the time. That was how strong the bond was already. It was like a part of her had been missing for thirteen years.
If she could not touch him soon, she would go crazy. His beautiful silver eyes haunted her every waken moment. The white and red came at her in her dreams. He was there all the time. She saw his magnificent white wolf everywhere, yet he was not there.
Putting herself on patrol duties to have an excuse to roam the forest in her search not to raise suspicion, she had been running aimlessly through the woods every chance she got, calling for him. Looking for their old meeting spots, hoping he would seek them out too.
But still nothing.
She had trouble concentrating on work and the people around her had begun to notice how agitated she was. Ace, of course, had said nothing to anybody, and he had not confronted Santine about what he knew, and she knew he knew. In a sense, she was glad he had not. On the other hand, she needed to talk about it with somebody.
Santine and Piers had had a massive fight Monday evening because she had blown off their movie night. She had been too preoccupied with finding Jax to care about anything else. If she had not been out looking for him or working, she had been locked up in her room, tending to her headache.
Santine just needed to know Jax was ok. The whole being mates and what that would entail in their future was a blur, and took a back seat to the fact that she was unsure if he was ok. She still felt his pain. It was not as prominent as it had been that night, but it was there, and it was not her own.
She felt him.
A soft knock on her door forced her from her tumbling thoughts. "Yes?"
The Door cracked open and Roma's worried face popped in. Her eyes scanned the room tentatively until they rested on Santine. Roma's eyes were red-rimmed, and she looked tired. "Eh, got a moment, sis?"
What the hell?
Roma usually just barged into a room with no concern as to what was going on in there. She normally had no respect for Santine and the work she did in her office. Her knocking was the first clue to something being up. Her asking nicely was the second.
