Daybreak, BK 4 of the Lightwalkers

XXII - Jon

A flurry of emotions flew through me that weren't my own. Confusion, panic, and finally, rage.

Where the fuck am I? Kain's voice screamed through my head, making me wince. It was like having someone screaming your ear, except I couldn't move away from it.

"Jon, what's wrong?"

Glancing up at Seth in the front seat, I didn't know how to tell him about Kain, and I was terrified at what would happen at sundown. Maybe Carrie could sedate me again-

Oh, I'm not going down that easy, sunshine. Do you think a little bit of knockout juice is enough to keep me down for the entire night? Fuck, what the hell happened while I was asleep?

I couldn't keep him from digging through my memories of the last few hours. Of waking up at the bar with Carrie and the other guy, Remi. Seth arriving, the hesitation on his face when I smiled.

Aww, he saw your fangs? Kain teased, then went back to looking through my memories. He took the time to study each of the new faces, focusing on Remi's the longest. Maybe this isn't such a bad thing after all.

I didn't like the sound of that.

Kain came forward in my mind, looking at Seth through my eyes. Your brother? Well, technically our brother, right?

"Jon, talk to me." Seth had climbed into the back seat, concerned coming off him in waves.

I shook my head. What was I supposed to say? How could I even tell him? I didn't want Seth and Kain to meet, even though I knew it would happen eventually.

You're right, sunshine. In fact, I'm sure it'll happen tonight.

"Carrie, pullover."

Seth's voice finally got my attention. I sat up straighter. "Don't. I'm okay, really."

Kain laughed. Are you sure about that?

"Jon-" Seth started, but I lost track of what he said, as Kain started again in my head.

Oh, he's going to be so much fun to play with. I can tell.

"It's okay," Carrie spoke up. "Really, I know what's going on. I'm going to drive a little faster, Jon, okay?"

I nodded and hoped that we'd get to wherever we were going before sundown.
