Someone is approaching India on July 8, 1497, four ships carrying 170 crew members from Lisbon over a man and his crew traveling from Europe to Africa, India, and beyond. Who was this person? The best solution to this problem was Vasco Da Gama. Da Gama's trip to India had many stops along the way to Africa. He also encountered problems from Muslim traders who did not want to be disturbed by their already profitable trading routes. He finally arrived in Calicut on May 20, 1498. At first Vasco da Gama and his trade were well received but this was short-lived. The Lord has commanded him to pay customary taxes like any other merchant. This has damaged the relationship between the two. Da Gama left Calicut in August 1498. His campaign met all expectations after bringing in goods costing 60 times more than travel expenses. He also accompanied a few Nair fishermen and 16 fishermen from Mukkuva. When Vasco Da Gama arrived in Lisbon in September 1499 after losing part of his staff to the skin, he was hailed as a hero and well-rewarded by the king. He was also given the title Admiral of India. On February 12, 1502, Da Gama led a fourth Portuguese ship to India with 15 ships and 800 men to force Portuguese interests in the east. During the march Da Gama killed hundreds of Muslims, often brutally in order to prove their worth. From this journey he returned victorious with silk, gold and an established abode. Vasco was sent back to India in 1524 to replace the incompetent defender .He contracted malaria shortly after his arrival in Goa and died in Cochin City on Christmas Eve 1524. The situation in Goa and the city of Cochin still reflects the cultural influence. of the Portuguese, who arrived as traders and conquered these lands soon. The Portuguese overseas territories of Goa existed for about 450 years before being annexed by India in 1961.
