-- fine line

three days later.

"THIS HAS BEEN THE BEST SIX WEEKS OF MY ENTIRE LIFE" Esmerelda sobbed, clinging onto her three friends, not wanting to go back home. "Thank you all so much"

Josslyn squeezed her best friend, silent tears falling down her cheeks as the realisation that their summer was over dawned upon them. She didn't want to let go, she didn't want it to end. If she could go back in time to prom night she would.

That day felt like yesterday, when she reunited with her best friends. After four years of zero contact, everything fell into place. Josslyn was at home when she was with these people, when she was with Vinnie.

"We'll see you again" Leo whispered, kissing his girlfriend on the temple. "We'll make it work"

"How do you know that?" Esmerelda whimpered. "What if-" She hiccuped. "What if this is the end? What if we all leave for college and just forget about each other?"

"I wont let that happen" Vinnie chuckled, patting Esmerelda on the shoulder. "I care about you guys too much to just forget about you"

They pulled away from each other one last time, admiring each others tear streaked faces before they jet off for the next year.

"I love you, guys" Josslyn said, smiling at the three.

"I love you too, JJ" Leo responded, holding her hand and giving it a tight squeeze. "You guys are really my favourite people on this goddamn Earth"

Vinnie let out a breathy chuckle, looking down at the floor to mask the fact his eyes were burning with unspoken tears. He looked up at the three people he had came to love and care for so much over the last six months and felt a weird sense of content.

Nothing had ever felt so right in his whole life. There was nothing more perfect than standing here in the living room of their RV, surrounded by suitcases and random bags. The vehicle still smelt faintly of Esmerelda's shampoo; There was still a stain on the couch from where Leo spilt his bolognese-for-breakfast a few weeks ago; The bedsheets were still crinkled from their previous nights rest, and the three hours they spent all cuddled in Vinnie's bunk this morning, just basking in the final minutes they had left together.

He knew he had completely lived this summer. He knew he did what he was destined to do. He knew he had made friends for life. He knew he had become closer than ever with his family. He knew he had gone a whole straight week without fighting with Esmerelda, which was a world record for them two. He knew he and Leo had made memories that they would share at family reunions twenty years from now. He knew he had fallen head over heels back in love with Josslyn Louise Simons.

"I guess it's time to go" Esmerelda whispered the words that they all dreaded to hear. "I don't want to go back in there" She looked out of the window and towards the front door of her family home. "Its so...dreary" Her shoulders slumped as she threw her head back and groaned.

"Well then" She carried in, speaking to nobody in particular but herself. Esmerelda picked up her suitcase and slung her backpack over her shoulder, walking over to the front door of the RV. "See you later"
