MARA

The cold wind cut across my face. My breath came up in clouds, and the surroundings filled with the sound of my boots against the snow. Behind me, a grating voice called out.

"Hey, queer! Are you going to fucking run again?"

The voice belonged to Skylar Wells, a human. She and her goons constantly call me slurs and harass me. It's hard not to let myself get upset with her and do something rash; I don't have the luxury of lashing out that she does.

In case you couldn't guess, I'm a werewolf. My entire family is werewolves, as well as the few friends that I do have. The general public doesn't know about werewolves, and that's how my family likes it. If people knew about us, half of them would call us monsters. They'd call us scum. They'd have us locked away. The other half would worship us. Those people would beg to be turned, thinking they'd have an easier life. They would romanticize us and create an occult following.

Being a teenager is hard enough; I don't need people treating me like a rabid dog or an ethereal being.

Skylar and her minions chased me across the street. Since it's winter, not many people go on walks. While that's great for my antagonizers, it's not ideal for me. I turned a random corner, almost slipping in the process. Skylar continued to jeer at me as I held my breath, hiding behind a dumpster. I prayed to the Moon Goddess that they wouldn't see my quivering form as they passed through the alleyway.

Making sure I was safe, I breathed a sigh of relief. I stood, dusting myself off. I thanked the Goddess and walked off toward the nearest building.

I pushed open the door, seeing an employee turn around with a tired smile.

"Howdy!"

He greeted. I nodded with a polite smile as I cleaned my boots off on the welcome mat. I wrung my hands as I looked around, seeing papers piled around the room and onto the employee's desk. After spotting some signs listing animal types, I figured this was the city shelter. I unzipped my winter coat and walked toward the dogs.

Call me crazy, but I prefer dogs over cats.

I walked into the next room and saw cages. Most were medium-sized dogs. They barked and jumped against the fencing as I approached. I petted most of them, covering my hand in drool.

As I wiped my hand off, I approached a kennel that was slightly larger than the others. Inside were two large dogs. They sat at the back of the kennel, sitting closely together. Huge would have been an overstatement; these two were the biggest dogs I had seen besides wolves. As my eyes traveled down their bodies, I noticed their feet were disproportionate to their bodies.

When my eyes locked with one of the canine's eyes, I felt a shudder run through my body. At that moment, I knew they were wolves. They weren't just any wolves; they were werewolves. I put my hand against the chain-link fence, waiting for them to approach. Instead of moving, they continued to sit there, looking skeptical of me.

I decided to do something I knew would make them trust me; I changed my eyes to a golden color. Golden eyes typically signal intense emotions in werewolves. It was only for a second, but that second was all the two wolves needed to see. They immediately sprung up, touching my hand through the spaces in the fencing. They sniffed desperately, their tails wagging.

I pulled away, causing them to whine. I ignored them and turned to get the employee I had seen before. One of them barked loudly, making it difficult to ignore them. I found the worker, greeting him.

His name was Tom, according to his name tag, and he helped me adopt the two 'dogs.' He stated he'd never seen them be this friendly toward anyone.

"I must be special, then."

I told him, giving him a cheeky smile. He agreed and sent me on my way.

Sitting outside the front door, I talked with the wolves.

"This is my pack house. I'll lead you to my room, but you are staying quiet. My parents don't know I met you two. It'll be a long story for all of us if they see you."

The two nodded in understanding, causing me to rise and open the door. I led the werewolves to my bedroom, careful not to make any noise. I closed the door behind me, watching them sniff around curiously. While they explored, I pulled out baggy clothes for them to change into.

I turned and faced the wall after I explained they could shift back. As they did so, I heard bones cracking. My face twisted as if I'd just bitten into a lemon, feeling sorry for how they must have felt trapped in their wolf forms.

After a few minutes, I heard a soft yet commanding voice.

"Ready when you are."

I faced them again and gasped. I was face to face with two women, each about 6'5, and as gorgeous as the texts depicted the Moon Goddess. They had flowing black hair, dark blue eyes, stunningly white teeth, the whole package.

As I gasped, the air caught in my throat, causing me to cough. It wasn't a little cough, but a large, spit-inducing cough. They watched helplessly as I keeled over, hands on my knees. I watched as they gave each other an odd look.

I eventually recovered, wiping my mouth, embarrassed. Laughing awkwardly, the taller woman stepped forward, introducing herself.

"My name is Sadie. My little sister is Ellie."

I shook her hand as Ellie voiced her complaints. A small shudder went up my arm.

"I'm not your little sister! We're twins!"

Sadie chuckled, stepping away from me.

"Yeah, but I'm fifteen minutes older."

"Are you ever going to let that go?"

Ellie whined, stomping her foot.

"Not until you're older than me."

Sadie said smugly, folding her arms. I watched wordlessly with a grin. Ellie groaned loudly, throwing her head back. I walked over to Ellie, opening my arms for a hug. She accepted, falling into my embrace. The same light jolt went through my body.

"It's okay, I'm a younger sibling too."

I jested, laughing slightly. Ellie, however, wasn't laughing. She was entranced in our hug, melting against my chest. She pulled away after a considerable amount of time, blushing.

"I'm sorry, it's been a while since I've felt another person out of my wolf form."

"No need to apologize, I figured that's what it was."

I explained, scratching the back of my neck. We all stood there a moment.

"So, are we just going to pretend that we didn't all feel that electricity?"

Sadie burst out, not enjoying the silence.

"That was what I felt?"

Ellie asked, speaking for me.

The three of us looked at each other, stunned.
