Chapter Nineteen
One year later...
"What's her name?" asked Lucy.
Sal sighed.
"Emily." he answered, "Emily Priest."
"When is the wedding?"
"I don't know. Newt didn't tell me."
"Why am I not invited?"
"Lucy, don't do this to yourself. Please."
"I loved him Sal."
"I know but..."
"But what?" Lucy cried, "But what? He's getting married now... he's just nineteen for god's sake! I mean what was he thinking? Does he love her? Does he even love her?"
"I don't know."
"You never know anything."
"I'm sorry. I wish I could do something to make you feel better."
"Lucy," said Mary, holding her hand, "is there anything we can do?"
"No." came the answer, "Don't worry, I'll be fine. It's just that... I'd planned so many things with him Mary!"
The girl broke down. Mary patted her on the shoulder.
"I've been planning so many things for the last two years! He promised me he was gonna come back, he promised me that we'd be fine. You know he told me that he was gonna kiss me when he came back. And I'd been waiting for that day, the day when he'd finally come home, rid of all this mess."
"I'm sure he still loves you Lucy."
"He's getting married, Sal! Married, you understand? His heart belongs to another girl... why would you marry someone you don't love in the first place?"
There was silence.
"I thought he loved me. You should've seen those eyes of his on the day he said goodbye. They told me he loved me. No one had looked at me like that before. And no one's looked at me like that since. I gave him my heart, my whole heart! How is he getting married, doesn't he remember me? Doesn't he remember that there's another girl who loves him, a girl whom he loved once too?"
"Don't do that, Lucy. You know he remembers you. He'd forget us, me and Mary. We might mean nothing to him. But you, you're the last person he'd forget."
"Yeah," said Mary, her voice getting softer, "stop crying Lucy, please? He wouldn't want to see you like this."
"I just hope the girl he's marrying knows how lucky she is." was all Lucy said.
One month after...
Alex walked to the bedroom door and shut it close. Then he locked it and walked back to the bed.
The girl in front of him was flushing furiously. He placed his hand on her cheek and kissed her.
"I love you Emily." said he, looking in her eyes.
"I love you too Alex." she whispered, "So much."
"You're looking beautiful, you know that?"
She looked at the ring on her finger.
"I should be looking beautiful, shouldn't I?" she asked, "I just became Mrs. Alex Moretti."
"I guess you did."
They kissed again. He ran his hand along the back of her dress and unzipped it. She unbuttoned his shirt. Alex didn't want to admit it, but he'd fallen for this girl. For the past few months he'd completely forgotten that he had once said he loved someone else.
