Note: Picture I drew above might not be 100% accurate to the contents of this chapter. Also ignore the humans and hand they look like trash 😅👀
As the night came, Tubbo and Tommy misjudged their decision to boat to the other side right now. When they started paddling away, they heard water churning, and saw weird figures and shapes below the water. They assumed it was the ocean life, just fish swimming and frolicking about.
They forgot about the Drowned.
Tommy was tiredly and hungrily looking down, not putting a lot of effort in pushing the paddles, when all of a sudden he heard a thump on his side of the boat, and peered over the boat's shell.
In front of him was a disgusting, grimy hand, covered in shredded seaweed and mud clumps, coming up from the inky, ocean water. It reached toward the top of the hull where Tommy was, then retreated and slithered back down, oozing out a mucous-y slime trail.
Tommy jumped up in fear and disgust. "What the wick!"
Tubbo looked up, and turned over to where Tommy was fearfully staring at.
"Oh my God," He said. "I forgot about the Drowned."
"I forgot about the Drowned." Tommy repeated Tubbo's words, unsure whether he was trying to be angry at Tubbo, or agree with him.
"Yeah, I forgot about the Drowned..." Tubbo also repeated in response.
They were both too tired to formulate another response, but Tommy made sure to shove his paddle harder, as to swat away any Drowned hand that dared reach up again.
They were treading across the water slowly, their food bars nearly so low that they were starting to feel fatigued and sluggish. When they just couldn't go any longer, muscles aching, and continuously yawning, they decided to rest for the night, and continue in the morning.
Tommy wanted to take first watch and watch the waters for any other disturbances, but it ended up being Tubbo who had to scrape the Drowned's claws off their boat. Tommy had his eyes closed, and even though sleep would not make the weakness go away, he was still making a horrible attempt to it, his back uncomfortably curved by the edge of the boat since he was so tall. The cold wind did no good to help him sleep either, with it's horrid whooshing sounds as well, and Tommy crossed his arms closer to his chest.
Tubbo, keeping a lazy watch, made a good, long, thought about their situation. Keeping an eye on the bright, glowing moon, Tubbo tried to calculate what time it was and how much time had passed. He wasn't sure, but it might have been 2 A.M. or so. The boys had tried to do a night mission once, in Hypix Town, and they had tried to teach themselves how to calculate time just by looking at the moon. Well, Tubbo tried, as Tommy didn't care and just wanted to do their thing. Tubbo couldn't even remember what they were trying to do; it was unimportant at this moment.
Tubbo concernedly took a look at his friend's condition, and softly clenched his own weak hands on the paddle.
"Tommy, I think this was a bad idea." He breathed.
Tommy opened up one eye. "What do you mean."
Tubbo scraped a Drowned's hand off the boat. "I mean, I think we shouldn't have boated. I think we should head back."
Tommy thought for a moment, his own concerns coming back to him. Then he shook his head. "No, No! I think we're good. We're gonna be fine!"
"You-you sure?" Tubbo frowned. Tommy's voice was becoming high-pitched from the absurdity of Tubbo's words.
"Yes," Tommy said with as much certainty as he could. "Cheer up, man."
Whether Tommy knew he was communicating it or not, Tubbo understood that they couldn't just give up now. But he knew they had to reach the island and forage for food as soon as possible.
